Positivity: The Role Of Optimism In The Workplace

Take five minutes to look around today’s society and you will realize that optimism for the future has diminished throughout the world. With continued tensions moving towards the beginning of war, political instability, poverty, and much more it is understandable to see why people have developed negative attitudes. The lack of optimism has reached so far, that today, people get upset and down over just about anything and everything even the smallest of things. This has carried over into the attitude employees bring into the workplace. As I am only twenty-three, I am years away from being in a position of management. Over my existence, I have developed a phrase on how I view life, which is “there are always two people worse off and better off than you, so what is the point of getting upset” (personal communications). The reason I have come to use this phrase often relates two sets of experiences in my life. First, throughout my life I have had twelve surgeries in addition to being a sick baby. Secondly, I am the youngest of five siblings, but I tell most people that I am the youngest of four. The reason is because sixteen years ago, my oldest sister ran away from home. This came about from a multitude of reasons, but resulted in seeing my sister once in sixteen years, no longer talking to half of my family, and most importantly a closer bond with my other siblings. These two experiences lay at the foundation of my positivity, because if I can live through these circumstances then the minute aspects of day to day life and work really are not that bad. My positivity is one of my unique abilities, and if I am going to work for the next forty plus years, this positivity will most certainly be carried over to any workplace I am involved …show more content…
At a smaller organization, we have no need for a company retreat because we see each other every day and are coherent to the long-term plans. Unlike these larger companies, the industry we are involved, accounting, is stressful, which amplifies with only have five total employees. People depend on us to handle their taxes, payroll, and company financials. The most stressful time takes place January through April 15th, or tax season. Throughout tax season, we are not allowed any comp time or vacation which means four months of six days a week of nonstop working, including massive overtime.
