The Importance Of Open Wounds

Decent Essays
During the summer before my senior year, I attended open houses of a college that I’ve heard great things about for their nursing programs. Mount Aloysius holds many open houses throughout the year. I attended one of many over the summer. At this open house they spilt all the students up into the groups by which career field and by which job you were interested in.

On Thursday, August 24, 2017 I got the experience to follow Horizon Specialty Hospital of Henderson’s Wound Care Team. During this experience, I was able to witness the removal of a wound VAC (vacuum assisted closure) and surgical stitches, different methods of wound monitoring and discussed the healing process. For new admissions, the Wound Care Team does a physical examination of the body, looking for any wounds, bruises, scars, tubes and IV placements. They take pictures, measurements and note the location of the wound. Since the hospital still uses paper charting, they handwrite all of their notes and upload them to the patients' medical chart when done with their assessment.…

In the book This I Believe, a collection of short essays, by Studs Turkel, a variety of people share personal stories on what he/she believe and the experiences that caused him/her to develop those beliefs. There is always the personal question on which is more important, gaining understanding of self or gaining understanding from others. Understanding of self is when an individual chooses to experience life for himself/herself instead of letting the concepts and ideas that the society around him/her consists of be his/her outlook on life. Understanding from others is when an individual chooses to accept what the people surrounding him/her believe that and he/she allows those beliefs to become his/her own, instead of creating a personal…

Love is a basic right that is inherited by anyone; however, the concept of homosexuality is rejected in society because it conflicts with societal norms that deem it appropriate for a man to be in love with a woman. As a result, Justin Chin’s book, “98 Wounds,” conveys the struggles of homosexuals whose sex lives are reflected by society’s rejection for them. Ultimately, in a society where homosexuality is rejected, homosexuals use sex as a means of expression in order to showcase their feelings of self-hatred and loathing to each other in the short stories, “Burn,” “Goo,” “Sugar,” “Woo,” “King,” and “Queen.” In the short story, “Burn,” the narrator has sex with his lover in order to feel affection that he has never received from his mother;…

I am excited to begin a fresh chapter of my life. As a nursing student, I hope Duquesne helps me first learn the basics of nursing, and subsequently provide various opportunities to work with patients in the city of Pittsburgh. However, I do not want my entire class schedule to be filled with only nursing classes: I wish to have a varied learning experience where I can meet others who study other majors. I recognize there are countless opportunities to become involved and I want to be able to balance my school work and these extra-curricular activities to the best of my ability. I also seek to continue to worship at a church each Sunday and participate in some sort of youth group found around or inside university grounds.…

After having spoken to another student who was also majoring in pre nursing, she gave me ideas to do extensive researching not only looking at the school requirements, but also key skills, work environment, and that is workload required. The articles I mostly used were from google scholar, SFSU Leonard library, study.com, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and National Student Nurses Association. These sources are credible because they have different studies to back up the results of their research. The National Student Nurses Association can be considered a blog as it does have some personal accounts in the article, but sticks mostly to the logistical and fact based results of the nursing program. Nursing students have to stay about two years in school.…

In the nursing field there are over 100 areas to specialize in. This large quantity of options makes it difficult for a young adult to know what he or she would like to specialize in and work with. There are two major ways to explore and find out where one’s calling may be, clinical experience and shadowing. The shadow opportunity was very enlightening. I was able to learn about a new floor of medicine I was not very familiar with; while shadowing a nationally recognized award winning nurse.…
