The year 1991 marked a major milestone in the history of the world because the internet officially went public. It is hard to believe that in 1991 anyone could ever imagine the importance the internet would play in the vast majority of American citizens lives. Today, the internet is available on computers, laptops, cell phones, tablets, televisions, and just about any electronic you can think of. The internet is readily available whenever someone wants to use it and has access to do so. With the rise and importance of the internet in daily lives, it is no surprise that online dating websites began to emerge and persist. Darwin probably had no clue that his theory would even come close to relating to online dating, but it indeed does. If an individual is expected to act in ways that increase their reproductive success, one of the first things and individual must do is find a mate to reproduce with. As previously mentioned, if face-to-face interactions are difficult for individuals online dating is a great alternative. This online, screen protecting, service allows for a person to open up and gain a level of comfort with a potential mate before meeting face-to-face and interacting. This online service also allows for a certain level of convenience. Technology is meant to be portable and taken on the go. Many public spaces now offer free WiFi for individuals to connect to the internet. This means the communication never has to end and a person could be talking to multiple individuals at a time. Since an individual has the ability to message several people at once, their odds of meeting a mate increases. The time spent going on face-to-face dates that do not work out could be spent messaging multiple people. Online dating also offers the convenience of never having to leave the home or messaging while working, thus opening up times previously unavailable to partake in mate finding
