Odysseus Journey Home Analysis

In the epic poem, The Odyssey, people have both helped and tortured Odysseus ever since the Trojan War was over. Odysseus has been stuck traveling from place to place just to get home to Ithaca to see his family again. There were three main parties who hindered his journey home: Calypso, Poseidon, and the suitors. Throughout Odysseus’ journey home he experienced isolation by the hand of Calypso on Ogygía and wasn’t allowed to return home until one of the gods stepped in and did something. He suffered from Poseidon’s wrath for blinding his son. And finally he was treated badly by the suitors in his own home. Calypso was th first to hinder his journey by holding Odysseus hostage on her island and didn't allow him to leave for 7 years. Imagine being held hostage for 7 years and not being allowed to see any of your friends and family. This would be hell for almost everyone and if it was not for Athena trying to bring him home, he would never have been able to leave. He was stuck and was forced to have relations with the goddess. He didn’t like Odysseus and gave him trouble on his journey. He did a number of things, like making it nearly impossible for him to sail on the ocean. Another thing he did to Odysseus was making a storm and causing him to be thrown overboard. If it wasn’t for Ino, Odysseus would have died. This wasn’t enough for Poseidon though. He had to torture him both physically and mentally. Odysseus wanted to die because of him. Poseidon did this because he was mad at Odysseus and he wanted to get revenge because Odysseus blinded his son, Polyphemus. That does not seem like a good reason to make someone’s life a living hell. If he didn’t tell Polyphemus who he really was, Poseidon would not have know that it was him and Odysseus would have gotten away with it if his ego weren't so big.
