It is said that obese youth are more likely to have terrible health issues as adults. SOC is not a weight loss program; it is a lifestyle teaching program. The SOC organization is different from the so-called fat camps cropping up around the world. The program stage for a child at SOC is determined by two factors age and weight. The primary focus of SOC is weight maintenance and healthy eating, not simply weight loss. “The most important strategies for preventing obesity are healthy eating behaviors, regular physical activity, and reduced sedentary activity such as watching television and playing video games” (www.health.state.ny.us). For most children depending on their age, the focus should be on maintaining their current weight while a child grows normally in height. “Weight loss is not a good approach for most young children, since their bodies are still growing and developing” (www.health.state.ny.us). As stated earlier, SOC is not a weight loss camp. We do not take the child away from the family or his or her support system for months or weeks at a time. We are a local organization, and our program is offered to children and their families as long as they need them. SOC offers access to a health care professional, exercise classes, sports, and a cooking 101class. Healthy living is a lifetime change, and we want our children, our future to be here for a lifetime. A major barrier to the treatment of obese children is the lack of insurance reimbursement. SOC is a nonprofit organization that will operate with the help of volunteers and the community. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. SOC is committed to defeating childhood obesity before a child reaches adulthood. To fight childhood obesity will take the involvement of not only the families and the community but also the government as well.
