Understand Current Health Issues

Health is a topic that everyone thinks about every so often. This could be because health directly affects a person. As a public health professional it is of great importance to understand current health issues to be able to assist those in need. Knowing what issues are currently affecting the general health of a population will allow health officials to have a better understanding on how to correct the issue. For example, the issue of obesity according to an article written by Roland Sturm causes more damage the smoking and drinking combined ( ). It important to understand that obesity is caused from certain behaviors that the society has accepted into the main stream population. What people focus on is taste, look, and smell. It is because of these senses that most people decide to eat unhealthy foods. It is because of these unhealthy foods that the majority of people do not eat healhty nutritional foods because the unhealthy population would rather eating food high in fats, carbs, and sugars. According to an article published by The Journal of Nutrition 90% percent of cases related to diabetes can be prevented by having healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, no tobacco use, and weight control ( ). Nutrition is an ever changing issue that continues to evolve as new research is conducted. There are five recommendations that the health community believes should never change, they are eating foods low in saturated fat, eating whole grain, drinking sufficient amounts of water, refrain from sugar and salt, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
