Fats usually consist of fatty acids and glycerol. All fats however are a combination of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Saturated fats are those commonly found in foods such as bread, fried foods, meat etc. They are known to increase cholesterol levels. Unsaturated fats consists of foods such as avocado, olive oil, omega 3 fatty acids etc. The human body needs these fats also for essential growth and energy needed to perform daily activities as mentioned above. Fats are not the fastest sources of energy but certainly considered a more efficient form of food. Each gram of fat is known to supply the body with 9 calories (Wansink et al 607). An important characteristic of fats is that when available in excess, they are stored under the abdomen and parts of the under skin as a source of energy if needed. Therefore, it is really important to limit the amount of total fat taken in through the diet in order to prevent excess fat from accumulating in the body and to prevent other health issues (Nestle et …show more content…
The reason is because they are simply the most easily available form of energy. They are mostly composed of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. Carbohydrates just like fats are classified into several groups. The smaller carbohydrates are known as simple sugars which consists of monosaccharides and disaccharides which consists of one or two sugar molecules. An example would be regular table sugar (Merck & Co 13). Then they are complex carbohydrates which are made up of many glucose molecules. Examples of these include; potatoes, vegetables etc. Even though carbohydrates are not known as an essential nutrient but as mentioned above they provide maximum energy. The human body uses biological processes to utilize carbohydrates to make glucose which is further broken down into adenine triphosphate or ATP, which is the most unit of energy (Matheson 22,
