NR explained the benefits of being a member of a professional organization for many reasons. The first being always staying connected and on top of the latest news, the monthly magazines (although she admits to being at least one month behind at all times), being able to connect with other leaders or like people with the same interest, current research, and evidence based practices. For her, one is to stay current on the most recent legislation regarding healthcare. I asked her if she was interested in becoming an active member in one of the previously mentioned professional organizations; she replied not right now. She is also a busy mother of five children. However, to what extend is that shared decision making occur in the intensive care units. The study’s results showed that communication is key in situations such as shared decision making conversations. The study showed that often time the level of communication was incomplete, especially among less educated families. The study also pointed out that shared decision making was associated with higher family satisfaction.
