The Importance Of Nurse Collaboration

Nurse-physician collaboration is essential to effective patient care. Team work and collaboration function effectively within nursing and inter professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision making to achieve quality patient care. Collaboration has been defined differently by nurses and physicians. Patient safety is the highest priority when patient care is involved. Despite the discrepancies in the definition of collaboration team effort, it is important for health care professional to communicate with each other and collaborate together as one unit concerning the plan of care and goal of their patient in order to give the safe and best care possible. “Professional partnership help to dispel competition, exploitation, and frustration in the delivery of healthcare. A professional relationship is a relationship based on mutual respect to achieve a common mission while each participant lives out his or her life’s purpose” (Hood, 2014, p. 102).
Researchers have discovered that working together reduces medical errors and increases patient safety. With collaboration, different teams of health workers comes together to coordinate a patient’s care and wellbeing which reduces the risk for burn out.
