Nonverbal Communication In Retail Essay

Working in retail, I see a lot of different people using all kinds of nonverbal communication; especially because I am a manager at Walmart. In just one day at work I see tremendous amounts of nonverbal cues. Cashiers waving their hands around to get a CSM’s (Customer Service Manager) attention, customers looking around viciously for a shorter line, people pointing which direction to go, and many more. One day I went there on my day off, specifically to people watch. Pulling into the parking lot, I already see a mother with her mouth open wide, probably yelling, and throwing her hands up to get her sons attention so that he comes along. I start walking up to the entrance, see the flood of people going in and out of the store. I walk along the crosswalk along with many …show more content…
I hear a loud beep, in which I am way too familiar with. It is coming from the handhelds that the CSM’s use. The handheld beeps when a cashier puts in a certain code on their register, the handheld tells us who it is, what register they are on, what they need, and more. Soon after the beep, I see CSM Lauren running towards register four. I look down at the register and see a cashier with a razor in a security box in her hand, in which she is viciously waving around. I’m distracted by the movements of her arms, until I hear Lauren’s name being called out. I look around and realize it is coming from register ten, because the cashier is standing away from her register with her arms crossed. Lauren puts up her index finger, issuing that she will be there momentarily. I wonder if that is what I look like when I am working. Running around everywhere picking up and giving out nonverbal cues. Having to look at the nonverbal and the surrounding situation to figure out what someone wants or needs, from a distance. I never really realized how many forms of nonverbal communication actually goes on in just one day at Walmart, or even just one

Sammy gets so aggravated with a customer because she starts giving him trouble: “customer starts giving me hell” (Updike 201). This anger ultimately causes him to call this customer “cash-register-watchers” (Updike 201) and “a witch” (Updike 201).Every day Sammy hears the cash register, as a result he comes up with a song: “Hello (bing) there, you (gung) hap-py pee-pul (splat)!”(Updike 204). The eye contact was the key aspect; they knew when one was in trouble or safe depending on the situation and where their eyes diverted to. The hand movement of stop and go helped as well. While I'm not planning on killing anyone, I believe that at work I can utilize the different methods of nonverbal communication with my peers. I work behind a bar, and there are some nights where we produce upwards of $10,000 in sales.…

Nonverbal communication has to do with how one will express how they are feeling simply through facial expression and body language. “Nonverbal factors can make the face-saving deception either succeed or fail,” which is not a good thing when one is telling a big lie because people do not realize even though your verbally saying one thing, your body language could be telling another story, but most liars tend to get caught (183). There were a handful of examples when it came to deceptive communication through out the movie. One example is when Fletcher was walking into work and was greeting everyone with nice compliments, he said to one guy “ Hey Pete! Losing weight?…

Take for example the use of the straight-forward, expressionless “poker face”, it appears that a person has a blank face and does not show emotions, but they do. This type of facial expression is difficult to decipher, but after carefully studying a person’s habits they will show cues. Body language and facial expressions are hard to control because most of them occur naturally. Most people use body language to intensify or emphasize what they are discussing. In most cultures people use body language even when the other person cannot see them, such as talking on the phone.…

In face-to-face interactions, our style of communication includes both verbal and nonverbal cues. Author, B. Strong (2014), reports: “Even when you are not talking, you communicate by your silence (e.g., an awkward silence, a hostile silence, or a tender silence) (Strong, 2014, p. 232).” On the other hand, phone conversations, online and electronic interactions are restricted only to verbal communication through written words.…
