To start off my topic, what is Non-verbal communication? Non-verbal communication is the “body language” that we see through each other in wordless cues. This manner of communication consist of the use of distance (proxemics), visual (Kinesics), vocal cues (paralanguage) and physical environments/appearance. In some cases, approaching (haptics) is used as well. Studies have characterized that non-verbal communication is used in everyday situations; a.k.a., the “wordless words.” Non-verbal communication is described as the practice of shared signals between parties that is commonly used in public speaking. Without communication, there would be no way of understanding the things that we would usually communicate with each other such as likes, and dislikes. Good non-verbal and verbal communication skills are important to have success in all languages. (Z. Hereford, essentiallifeskils.net) There are many different forms of language in every culture of the world, but the one language that stands out the most throughout it all is body language. However, did you know that sign language also falls under non-verbal communication? Sign language is the language of our body that we use in place of words for those who are wordless. Even though Sign language isn’t a language that everybody understands, it is used to show emotions through the body to express feelings and concerns the same way that we communicate in others areas of non-verbal communication, and is a universal language. (National Association of the Deaf.) Nevertheless, we use these communications in our own everyday life. Either it be communicating with the store clerk that our favorite type of bread is not on the shelf, telling our bosses at the lunch meeting the current events, or simply saying hello to a stranger on the street. We use our body language to describe our emotions in said situations (the work place, the outing, the simple store, and at random) to express our verbal dialogue with more then what we say.
