1.) I believe the most crucial plot in this story is when he states "In consequence, I am inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores. " I find that the most crucial because this was part of the introduction to the story. It was a very interesting story to read. 2.)…
At the beginning of the novel, Nick describes himself as a person that reserves judgement. He said he is inclined to reserve all judgement. He said he was privy to the secret griefs of wild, unknown men. 3.He describes Tom as an arrogant person who cheats on his wife. And who is a very rich man.…
When Watt uses cuts and abrupt transitions when Nick remembers his Dad after he found out he was diagnosed with cancer and how he reacted to it. it shows the similarities and contrasts of Nick and his father and gives the viewer thoughts on Nickʼs fear of death. Nickʼs dad tryʼs to stay positive and it gives Nick thoughts on whether or not he should react the same way. The abrupt transitions build intensity in the viewer and also build suspense.…
Reading the first part of the story I did not think the story would end with finding a dead man on the ground. My feelings toward the story were surprised because the way the story started off there were no clues of the ending. In paragraph 5 things started to turn around because he authors gave out warning of what was about to happen. I was also surprised at how little Myop reacted to finding a dead body. The way she reacted was not usual for a ten year older a regular ten year older would go crazy but instead she was willing to do others things to find out what was going…
We all remember that one day in fourth grade when the teacher asked what we wanted to be when we grew up. Immediately, our imaginations started churning, thinking over the endless possibilities of jobs, and always trying to outdo the imagination of our friend sitting across the table. Some kids shouted out a firefighter, a nurse, a priest, a teacher. Yet, there was always that one kid who thought that he was the best. He would proudly say, "I want to be rich.…
The morality of the characters in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby can be questioned. Rather than merely good or bad, black or white, honest or dishonest, characters are often grey -- neither good nor bad but morally ambiguous. Though Nick Carraway is presented an honest narrator and objective observer who values trust, Nick Carraway, as a character, becomes involved in the moral ambiguity of the wealthy East Coast and inadvertently, he himself assumes some of the faults which he criticizes the other characters for, illistrating that even a fundamentally good character such as Nick can be tainted by the admiration of wealth. Nick’s honesty as a narrator is crucial to the integrity of the novel as a whole.…
The conclusion of Nick’s development is shown in both parts of the short story, "The Big Two-Hearted River". These stories show the end result of Nick’s growth, but also show that he is still growing and trying to change into a better person. Nick chose to go camping and fishing to get his mind off the war and his life, but to also reflect on all the opportunities he’s given, the people he met, and the things he learned. Some of these include, Bugs, who had shown him to how to clean up his plate with bread, and Hopkins, who had told him how to make good coffee during the war. However, Nick made this coffee wrong, which shows that he still has learning to do (Hemingway 140-142).…
Carelessness is the behavior of a neglection that one many portray in their decision. In the 1920s, people were reckless and did not care what the turnout would be. They would go to a party and have one too much drinks; go behind the wheel and get into a car when they know they were unable to drive is one of many examples of carelessness. The Great Gatsby, a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is not only based on romance and love, but it foreshadows the lack of responsibility and self control these characters have in the novel. Carelessness is pivotal in the character’s lives because they are blinded from reality; they are only living through their wealth which causes them to do wreckage to their lives.…
The great Nelson Mandela said, “There is no passion to be found playing small--in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living”. Reinvention is possible for anyone willing to try and is what some might say keeps them interesting and content with their lives. Throughout The Great Gatsby, many of the characters like Gatsby, Daisy and Nick undergo changes in order to reinvent or better themselves. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald conveys the idea that reinvention is the key to happiness and success in one’s life.…
The surprise element no matter the less I enjoyed and just like most the other parts of the book I enjoyed the ending to. The English in the book was never hard to understand. And due to it being a child's literature book I never had to use the dictionary. The book works well in a sense that the different chapters and parts connect nicely.…
After this Tom and Daisy and their baby decided to run away and act like nothing ever happened. This completely changed Nick’s views on Tom and Daisy. Their true colors came out to Nick they were selfish, careless, and did not take responsibility for what they did. This intensely affected Nick’s views on Tom and Daisy and the wealthy and high class parts of society. Nick was not judgemental…
Critics are divided on the subject of how deluded Nick actually is. William Voegli (2003) claims that Nick is grounded and honest- if not initially naive, but ultimately changed by his experiences. Being the bystander, he is able to observe…
The fast-paced, fun-driven New York lifestyle was something Nick longed for. He assumed moving to New York to achieve this would be enjoyable, that is until he experiences Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby’s lives. He was willing to do anything to fit into this lifestyle, but he loses his equilibrium because of it. He comes to find this New York lifestyle he craves is rather corrupting and ludicrous. Nick loses himself in the situations where he is too curious, overly indulged, or blinded by.…

The choices made by today’s media, such as “news reports” and television shows flaunting celebrities famous for being celebrities, might show that the world is solely populated by materialists. But, pondering the situation, one must come to see that at least a portion of those watching these “news reports” of fashion and celebrity icons must be romanticists. They pine for a better life for themselves or their family, but do not have the good fortune to be one of the rich or famous. Another completely separate faction are realists when it comes to such “news” programs and the misplaced attention on the rich and famous. This group may take a short moment to assess the situation and then do what is called for: change the channel.…
