I explained that the first to pick up their phone had to pay for everyone’s meal. The guys thought it was an alright idea when they pile started to light up and vibrate everyone instinctively reached for it. The few who were strong and not as attached restrained themselves and enjoyed a normal conversation for the first time in what seemed like months. The few who felt the need to reach for it looked at each other and decided they would all split the bill. The rule became that if you left your phone until the meal was over you ate for free. As we continued through the night a couple more picked up the phones. I was saddened with the results of the experiment as I learned the people I’m closest to were part of the epidemic of feeling the necessity to be with people who weren’t there in person. As I continued into the paper I developed arguments based on my experiences the last week. I talked with my and editor and she thought this was a great problem to write about. I began to cement in an idea how the lack of human interaction was beginning to cause a serious decline in personal connections. As this essay became more complex I saw serious fears in our society.
