Reflective Essay: The Roles Of Reading And Writing

There’s been many things in my past that has affected the reader and writer that I am today and I honestly had not fully realized how much of an impact it had until I actually started thinking about it. From elementary school all the way up to high school, everything has played a role in my advances in literacy I use today. My reading and writing play two different roles. Reading is something that I enjoy and am very fast at doing while my writing is not at a high enough standard for what I believe it could be. There are many causes to that. Growing up, my first language was Spanish. Everybody in my household spoke it, including my siblings who were fluent in both English and Spanish. Boy was I wrong. It’s not that I didn’t know that English and Spanish were completely different because I did, I just never realized that there was a language barrier. Not until I started school. The language barrier was so frustrating due to the fact that when I wanted to communicate with other students and make friends I couldn’t because I didn’t speak English and they couldn’t speak Spanish. You see my problem there? You do not realize how it made a 5 year-old feel, to not be able to make friends because of the simple fact that I didn’t know English. I felt like a fish out of water, like I didn’t belong, and I didn’t like that feeling. It gave me butterflies in my stomach no, it felt more like the swarm of the winged insects were forming their habitat inside me until the school day ended, metaphorically of course. Since I obviously did not speak English they put me into a program called ESOL, a program for kids who English wasn’t their first spoken language.
