My dad’s dad has only been here at the U.S. once, when my sister graduate from junior high school. Whenever, my family and I get a chance to head to Mexico they are like stranger to me, but I try to talk to them, but obviously, they have favorites. Leon and Elaine almost act like children. It reminds me of the movie Curious Case of Benjamin Button, they do not know how to dial on the cell phone. They live simple lives and seems like the young people do not bother them as if they were ghost. In the beginning, I was frightened to interview them because I have to be careful with my words I use and not to offend them. Since, they are traditional folks, they have a hard time adjusting to my generation and not to say things that inflicted upon their religious beliefs. When I was introducing myself to them, I did not want to say, “the reason I am interviewing you is that I need to interview and old person”. I could not say that so I made this more like a conversation. What was different when I talk to seniors is culture. I could easily talk to my mother’s friend, who was from my mother town and who took my mother in when she was sixteen. This was easy to have a conversation because she bonded with my mother when my mom did not have anyone when she came here to United States. If I wish I interviewed my mother friend, who is now 77, I could, but she lives in Sacramento. Her life story is completely different from Leon. Husband abandons her and her children do not speak to her, on the other hand, she lives in a community of retired people and they take her to bingo. Last time, I saw her we went to the beach with her dog and was full of joy to see my mother and I. Elder people feel depressed like no other and that effects them living life. Therefore, I learned that there is much knowledge to gain from seniors because
