One bright, hot sunny day, my mom and I went on a walk to the beach. That’s one of our favorite thing to do on the weekend. The hot sand on my bare feet, the bright rays of the sun beaming on my back, the waves of the clear blue ocean crashing against the rocks. We walked by a shop that read, “ Help Wanted. “ I thought to myself how exactly jobs work. Do you have to go to college for all jobs? How long do you have to be in college to actually get a job? I have multiple questions of college, but I never really thought about getting my questions answered. “ Mom, can I ask a few questions? “ I said while she was setting her blanket down on the sand.
Usually my mom tans and reads while I listen to music. “ Sure. About what? “ She responded. “ College. I want to figured out ways that can help me in the future. I know it's pretty early but I at least want to get an idea. “ My mom looked up at me with a surprised look on her face. “ Umm.. sure, go ahead and ask away.” I looked over at her and sat on the towel. I thought of my first question. “How many colleges did you apply for?” I looked up at her squinting with the sun in my face. “ Three.” “ Which ones did you apply to? “ She took a minute

“ I always wondered which college I wanted to go to. There’s so many to choose from. “ Did you get into all the ones that you applied for? “ My mom looked up covering her forehead to cover her eyes from the sun. “ Getting into community college was easy. Applying for the nursing program was more difficult because of the long wait lists. Each school had around a 2-3 year wait list. “ Wow. That’s a long time. I hope I wouldn’t go to a college with too long of a waiting list. “ Which one did you end up going to? “ My mom sat on her towel putting on her tanning lotion. “ Napa Valley college because they accepted me into their nursing program before the others. “ “ How many years were you in college for? “ I

Why TFA? I believe that Teach for America would provide me with a great opportunity to give back to those who are coming from underprivileged communities. Having come from a family that struggled with money, I feel as if I would be well equipped to understand the lives of my students and be able to help them with more than just their studies. I want to provide my students with a role model to whom they can look up and help lead them on a path that will broaden their horizons, ultimately changing their lives for the better.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

When most students think of writing, they think of strenuous literature essays for an english class, or five page research papers with deadlines and headaches. I live for those headaches. A writer is not someone who simply puts words onto a page. They put emotion within the words, spread messages and promote ideas. To write is to incase a memory in glass, detailing every single moment down to the pattern of the snowflakes that fell last Christmas.…

My decision to return to college was purely random. There was no pondering over the decision; no weighing in the pros and cons, no thinking it through or any real thought behind it. I literally woke up one morning and said to myself “I think I’ll go back to college” and I made the call. I called the College of New Rochelle and made the appointment for the admissions test. And before I knew what was actually happening, I was a matriculated college student.…

Before college I could’ve easily convinced myself that I knew everything I needed to know about life and I was the person I’d be for the rest of my years to come; I was wrong. In high school I was known as the student who never needed to study in order to get good grades, unfortunately that changed once I entered college. College opened my eyes academically, socially and more importantly it introduced me to different aspects of life and myself. Everyone tells you that college is a different experience, but you never really understand until you enter college yourself.…
