Ever since I can remember as a child, I have always been the chubby kid. For some reason, I never noticed it as a child. Maybe it was the fact that I just didn’t care then, or maybe it was the excitement that I got from opening that twelve-piece nugget box that had nothing but tastiness on the inside from McDonald’s, and let’s not forget about their delicious, salty fries either. Guess what though? After a while of eating all this delicious, unhealthy food, I started to get bigger and bigger. In a way I guess you could say this was a New Year’s resolution for me, but not one of those resolutions that people ultimately end up failing in. I would tell myself, “No, this was going to be different.” I had no plans of slowing down, giving …show more content…

Over the past 55 years, obesity rates have skyrocketed. According to the CDC, 13.4% of adults were obese in 1960 (Green, "U.S. Adult Obesity Rates Since 1960") and have since then nearly tripled to a whopping 35.7% in 2015 (CDC, "Adult Obesity Facts"). It is a statistic all too apparent in society today. When one observes how culture has evolved to satisfy the immediate needs of the self rather than one’s whole well being, it is easy to picture how this percentage climbed up so high. With this in mind, judge’s winner Maria and reader’s winner Matt Bowers, for a writing contest in Slate Magazine, sought to reason with how to treat this crisis.…

Pharrell Williams once said that "If you go with fear you will fail. But if you go with faith you will be fine. You are capable of so much". This quote, along with many others written in the margins of my notebooks, exemplifies the emotional battle that is constantly occurring inside my head. I believe that not one single event truly signified the life-long transition from childhood to adulthood in my life, rather my view of the world and those around me changed drastically as I aged.…

Let me start off my saying that this was a very eye-opening experience for me. Although I found it difficult to record everything I would eat for a whole seventy-two hours, this activity has showed me that I really need to make some changes to my diet. However, the most difficult part of this whole process was probably the actual recording my food intake. Every time I would sit down to eat something, whether it was a whole meal or a small snack, I would have to pull out my phone and record every specific thing I ingested. The primary tool I found most useful was the My Fitness Pal app, as it gave me both the macronutrient totals and calorie total for almost every food I ate.…
