Personal Narrative: The Big Bang Theory

As my grandpa walked into the dreary kitchen, he rolled up his sleeves and began to pull paper plates from our old cupboard like he had every Friday night since grandma got sick. Friday was pizza night. He finished cutting the greasy delicious pizza, that the local pizza place couldn’t, and plopped a piece on three plates. One plate for me, one for grandma, and one for himself. Friday was the only night grandma would allow me to eat in front of the TV, and not force me to talk about school or whatever sport I was playing at the time. As the big bang theory played on the television, I watched mindlessly, with no idea what was to come. In the small farming town where I grew up, there was one things they preached like church, always eat your …show more content…
All I could think was, what discredited his claim? Why is it that this 15-year-old boy was considered a liar? What makes his issues false but, other people’s true? Was it the fact that he was really a liar or the fact that the truth was too undoubtable difficult for everyone else to comprehend? As I got bigger so did my curiosity, there must have been a reason for his “lies.” As Matt’s journey with veganism progressed, he continued to grow even more sick. within a matter of months, Matt went from 165 pounds to 90. After that matt was a ghost, eight years flew by with him in and out of hospitals across the state. Matt continued not to eat and was diagnosed Anorexic, Malnourished and Celiac. Celiac is a word I didn’t learn until after Matt had passed away. My family was so convinced his disease was upstairs, no one talked about it. Celiac is a hereditary autoimmune disease. This disease attacks peoples small intestine when they eat gluten containing foods, which is anything containing wheat, barley, and …show more content…
I did the research, I kept a tedious journal of my diet, and to my knowledge, I had completely cut out gluten. I, a 17-year-old girl, did what no doctor could do in the countless appointments I have had. I figured out what was wrong. I fixed myself. I was finally in control. The doctor asked me to explain my symptoms and I nervously recited them for the fifth time that day. My hands were trembling and shivers ran up my spine as I awaited the doctor’s response. A few tests later, I had my results, I have celiac. Even though you look at me and don’t see the effects of celiac, they are very present in my day to day life. Brain fog can cause lack of focus, reduced mental acuity and, lousy memory recall. Continued exposure to gluten puts everybody with celiac at risk of long term health complications, which is why we need to raise awareness for celiac disease. If labeling was required for all gluten containing products and, restaurants were educated on celiac, the amount of accidental exposure incidents would drop drastically. We would no longer have to google every item we buy, or try it and hope for the best. When most people think gluten they think fad diet. We need to change societies outlook on gluten free products. If more people knew the impact something simple like changing their gloves could have on people like me, I think they would be a lot more

Around the world, it is rarely, if ever, seen in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America; but the numbers of diagnoses in these regions are steadily increasing (Gujral). It is a hereditary disease, and somewhere between 5% and 22% of patients have an immediate family member that had also been diagnosed with Celiac disease (NFCA). It can affect both men and women of all ages and races. However, it does seem to be more prevalent among Caucasian individuals. Many cases of Celiac disease are still undiagnosed.…

Nevertheless, it’s not only the increasing newly diagnosed people with CD that are consumers of gluten-free foods. The Gluten-free food market is growing so rapidly that it’s estimated to surpass lactose-free and low-carb products and reach 6.2 billion USD by 2018. In Canada, about 10 million people prefer to eat gluten-free, which is almost a third of the entire population! The fascinating thing is that only 1% of those consumers have CD and 6% have non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). With CD being the last reason for following a GFD, Agriculture Canada states the additional reasons in order of increasing prevalence: “1.…

Life is simply perspective. Some say that you have your whole life to do something, while others will argue that life is short and you should enjoy it to the full extent of it’s worth. You can look at something as exquisite, or atrocious. It doesn’t change what it is, but it changes your reaction to it. No matter how sure you are about the morality, someone else could view it differently.…

One’s values and beliefs about the world we live in are constructed through real life encounters, as well as teachings that they may have experienced though their lives. My personal paradigm is based around my ethical view on life. I adopted a consequentialist view which is also a very controversial because it brings the idea that you could make immoral decisions without consequence, as long as the outcome had benefitted the most people or had the best outcome. For me in most cases, making decisions based on the ethical morality of the means in a situation puts a stop to progress, leads to less desirable outcomes, and demonstrates actions that maybe come of as a very selfish way of making choices. There are people that say…

Mark Lang, a food marketing professor at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and co-author of "Precision Target Marketing”, wrote about how rapidly this new trend is growing without influence from what the diet may be doing. The creation of the universe, a vast and controversial subject of origins, is constantly debated, twisted, and altered to reach a point of what some would say, an understanding. Everyone has thought about questions of origin, and this debate is no stranger to conversation between people. The question of origins can arise in any area of study. In the study of chemistry one would wonder, where these elements originated. In more political science studies, specifically government, one would wonder the origin of a nation and how it came to be (Morris 1).…
