Reflective Essay: My First Semester At Ohio State

Improved Essays
After completing my first semester at Ohio State, I can already tell I am part of something very special. Granted, when I was accepted and when I made my decision to attend, I started to get the feeling that this would be the case. Growing up, I didn’t really think that this would be my case or story, but looking back on it, I am so happy it is. I was born in 1998 in Toledo, Ohio. Toledo as always been the place I call home, and I have spent most of my time in Ohio as well. I know the importance of being from this state. And frankly, I love it. I also love living in Toledo. Mainly because of my old high school, Toledo School for the Arts. When I tell people that some of my greatest memories come from my school, people just laugh and assume …show more content…
It was who we meet while playing. Our group was so closely knit, we tended to do everything together. It transcended beyond just performing, and it turned us into a family. None of us realized how true that was until August of 2014. On August 8th, one of our closest friends and band members died in a car accident. For all of us, it was the toughest thing we had ever went through. We needed each other. We cried for each other. We were there for each other. I have never learned more about being a family until that tragic event. While his memory still lives on with us, we miss him every time we play our drums. Through my art, I have accomplished many feats. I have taken my rehearsed pieces to OMEA contest twice, once as an ensemble and the second time was a solo number. Both times, I received the highest grade that could be given in the class. At my school, I have also gained some community service experience through an ambassador program. Not only do we help in our own community, but we also usher and volunteer at our own school’s performances and events. For two years, I was also part of our Quiz Bowl team, where I competed a few times at the junior varsity …show more content…
I started with an early arrival program called R-Lead. During the early week, I was part of many leadership exercises, seminars, and was an OWL during move-in day. I am also currently on the Baker West Arts Council, which is the residence hall council of Baker Hall West. On that council, I am also part of the learning community, where I have already assisted with planning events for the residents of my hall. Finally, I am also part of the Visual and Performing Arts Learning Community that is also in Baker Hall. I am also aspiring to be an RA this upcoming academic year. As for my education at OSU, I am studying Arts Management. With my prior experience in the arts community and seeing how they impact the world, Arts Management seems like a perfect way to continue what I love in an administrative perspective. Having a scholarship to help achieve this goal would mean the world to me. I want to make a cultural impact in the community I live in. Ohio State is one of the only schools in the state with this focus of study. I want to take advantage of that opportunity to help a community greater than

My senior year could have not started any better. On July 30th, 2015 I get a call from Coach Brock Hayes from Louisiana College offering me a scholarship to play at the college level. Ever since I was small, I always dreamed about playing college football and it finally came to reality. Fall camp was getting ready to start, and I was so excited to get my senior season started. I put in so much work and effort to get into the position I was in, so I was not going to let my team down.…

I have grown tremendously in the past three years since I have graduated from ODU. I am looking to grow in my career and also make a difference. I hope the admissions office at Saint Joseph’s University can see that I am a changed individual who is constantly seeking to obtain knowledge in my own field. For example, I have received awards of recognition and appreciation from the Department of Juvenile Justice. Overall, the transformation from then until now is that I have been focused on improving my performance by utilizing my training and shadowing my superiors.…

With a whistle around my neck and two friends by my side, I was never more proud than being a drum major for the Clark band. There is no place that made me more joyful than in the band hall, and outside on the podium, seeing months of improvement in front of me. The Clark band will always have a special place in my heart, giving me pleasant memories, and most importantly, two new best friends, that I am proud to call my fellow drum majors. The best moment that I have experienced in marching band was last year at Wylie Invitational, our final marching contest. It was six o’clock on a Saturday morning.…

My freshman year of college I struggled greatly with the cost of college. I had moved out of my mother’s house and was living with my grandmother. The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

I am interested in the Early College Academy because it is a great opportunity. I understand that I will have to do a lot more work here than in other schools because of the college courses, but that does not matter to me. I will still study and work hard for the duration of my time here. This is the only school in which I can knock off two years of college for free. I also like the schedule here and how it's shorter, but I understand that I will have to use the rest of the time for studying and that's alright for me because in order achieve one's goals one has to work hard and that's what I…

Since the first day, time has been flying really fast. Starting a fresh new day, meeting the same teachers and same old friends, I still cannot imagine that I am now a senior! In my senior year, there will definitely be a lot of challenges and obstacles for me to conquer, but I believe that as long as I do everything step by step, I can beat down the difficulties in this senior year. When I was in junior year, I often heard last year’s seniors told me how hard is it to come up with a senior project topic, and they kept on reminding me to start thinking of my topic and finding my mentors. Luckily, I had research method class last year, so I knew how to do my APA style references and I had many presentations experiences last year.…

As my first semester almost ends, there is a plethora of aspects that played a major role in how much stress and pressure I have encountered. These aspects have created negative and positive outlooks on college and life, which is evident in my attitude as the semester closes. I have experienced so much pressure, and anxiety from one semester because of my perfectionism. I am constantly checking Moodle and MyClaflin to be on top of things. From this semester, I have reviewed various syllabuses and schedules of assignments, which has all become a blur.…

One of the reasons I would be honored to be a student ambassador is because I want to introduce and familiarize other prospective students with the school that I love so much, that has opened so many doors of opportunities, introduced me to so many amazing people, and has given me a top notch education. I want to encourage students who are perhaps unsure if WSU is right for them, or if college in general is right for them, that WSU and all that it has to offer makes it the place for anyone, from all backgrounds, all experiences, and all areas of interests. This is because WSU also offers majors, clubs and organizations, and communities in which anyone can find a sense of belonging and acceptance. Aside from the school itself, WSU is home to…
