Reflective Essay: Why I Volunteer To Volunteer In High School

Throughout high school, I was told the deadline to knowing what my future was going to hold was on graduation day. I found out that was not completely true. I received the determination for furthering my education during my semester off at work. I worked daily between hours eight am to three pm. After three pm then came in the high school and college students. Between eight am and three pm time frame there were generally people over forty working. I work at a grocery store and I stood at the same spot daily. One of my co-workers from a different department always said “hi” to me, he was a little over forty. Even though I had volunteered before because of my Pleasant Valley background. There was a difference between having to volunteer to graduate to being willing and honored to volunteer because of how helping those girls every week made me feel. Where I volunteered the coordinator made sure I could have basically kept track of them and made sure they were paying attention during class and asked them questions about what they have learned in class. Yet between all of that, they have asked me for advice with a sibling they were fighting with or they have asked me girly stuff like if periods hurt. Those girls thought of me as a leader which I have never thought of myself as. They had asked me what my plans were after high school. After I told them that I was going to take a semester off, a good majority questioned me. They had look at me with less respect. A good majority had the preconception that if I did not attend college right after high school that there was a slim to none chance I would have returned. The people that I thought believed in me ended up having not been able to trust my words. What they did not understand was that for twelve years I barely had confidence in myself. That semester off gave me a time to gain confidence in myself on my own without the stress of meeting deadlines for school or deeply fighting for acceptance by others. My gain in confidence taught me that desiring acceptance is not a way to succeed in life. Having been unconfident I was always the follower of any group I was in.
