Personal Narrative: My Interaction With Technology

Improved Essays
Before this class, I hadn’t really considered the nature and significance of my interactions with technology. Looking back, however, I realize that technology has influenced what I do and how I think from a very young age. From playing video games and memorizing the keys on a computer key board as a child, to doing various projects in high school and college, to using an e-reader I have immersed myself in a culture of technology without much conscious thought. I think that many people have this same attitude of adaptation. They are introduced to and continue to use technology at least in part because their society expects them to have a certain level of experience with new media in order to be successful. It is a combination of this desire …show more content…
In terms of entertainment, my computer serves as my DVD player, my CD player, and my way to access social networking sites such as Facebook. Academically, I use my laptop to write my papers (most of which have to be checked for plagiarism by turnitin.com), as well as to do research and communicate with professors through e-mail. Whenever I start to feel a bit technophobic, I remind myself of what my life would be like if there were no library databases to look up articles or quickly locate books. In some ways, I feel that this type of technology has benefited me greatly. It has made me a faster, more efficient researcher and given me access to the most up to date and accurate information. On the other hand, I have to question whether people are becoming too dependent on technology to organize their everyday life. I know that if my laptop was broken, I would feel completely lost. Think of all the research papers that would disappear, all the e-mails that would go unread, all of the Facebook or Twitter pages that would go without new posts. We have reached a point in our society where constant access to technology is almost a requirement. Thus by using these new forms of new media as a student I am preparing myself for a job market in which technological literacy is crucial for

How has technology changed since the days of the typewriter and scribbling on leaves in the old days? In recent discussions of how technology is dominating the lives of people today, a controversial issue has been whether technology makes us lazier and less prone to find information we need without the web. On one hand, some argue that the internet is a extremely useful tool that can be used to very efficiently obtain the information that is needed. On the other hand, however, some argue that the internet is becoming the center of many people’s lives and they’re beginning to become dependent on it. The best perspective on this issue is reflected by Nicholas Carr in his book The Shallows when he writes, “The price we pay to assume technology’s…

Its a well known fact that technology is becoming more embodied in our lives. The Pew Internet and American Life Project released a study stating the number of adults that own cellphones, laptops or tablets is rising. This increase in ownership of technology has revolutionized access to information through the internet. One notable case is O’Grady v. Superior Court of Santa Clara County (2006). Apple filed a case against an unnamed individual who allegedly leaked information on several online sites regarding new Apple products.…

I established a 15 hour technology fast from Saturday 10 PM to 1 PM Sunday morning. I selfishly chose this time frame because I knew that any other time during the week would be nearly impossible to accomplish. Since, I am indebted to my technological devices to complete assignment, manage my schedule, and meet required responsibilities. In addition, I chose to include sleeping hours because it would cut a majority of the time that I would be without technology. However, I did not want to fully exclude myself from this social experiment, therefore, I extended the hours.…

I have always been interested in technology and how it works. Whenever I would get a new technological device, I would instantly start playing with it and figure out everything it is capable of. I also enjoy helping other people figure out how to make their electronics work; even if it is something as simple as explaining to my grandparents why one text message is green instead of blue. I also really enjoyed a summer camp where I learned how to program a computer game and program a robot to go through a maze.…

The smell of hairspray, hair wax, and burning hair at 4:30 AM isn’t pleasant to most people but to me, it’s one of my favorite things to wake-up to. We had already made it through semi-finals and now we are in about to preform in finals. Only 8 teams make it to finals, and currently, we are in 7th. Smearing on foundation, patting on the blush, and bronzer, layering on the sparkly eyeshadow. Oh, and who could forget about the intensely bright red lipstick?…

As teachers we have to equip our students to live in this kind of world. According to Sousa, “…children who spend their early years in front of screens will eventually have adult brains that are hardwired to process information at a frantic pace” (Sousa, 679). Technology has many positive aspects, but often gets a bad rap. According to Wedlock & Growe, “The problem is that technological innovations need to be transformed from tools of obsession into tools of education”…

Imagine yourself in the middle of a busy office “Tap-tap… tap-tap-tap…” This is the sound from typing. Every time a finger presses down on a key, it generates a slightly different sound, and the interval between each tap is distinct as well. Together, all those finger tapping make an inconsistent, disordered noise, yet this is the sound that calms my mind the most. The typing sound reminds me the day I moved to the U.S., where I was utterly stunned by the view of this land of technological innovations.…

The primary purpose of this essay was to inform the audience of the effects of technology with reference from the past as well as today 's developing effects. Carr wants the audience to begin thinking about just how the use of technology could be affecting them. Affecting their concentration, learning skills, and even changing the one may be thinking. In order for Carr to effectively relay this message he had to know what he was talking about thoroughly, which was accomplished by using all types of types. My first personal interaction with social media was precisely in 2006, two years after what I could call the boom of Myspace. Compare to most of friends, it took me awhile before joining the circle because I didn’t think it was a useful tool for me until I took my first trip to France, where I started to miss my families and friends and I then create an account, just to communicate pricelessly with them. Back then, there were no prevalent features as video chat or voice and photos upload, as Facebook is doing nowadays. We were at least able to text message and the security awareness was not a huge concern yet.…
