Personal Narrative: My Journey To Topeka High School

Improved Essays
I first came to Topeka High school in August of 2014. It was my freshman year and the first time in stepping into a new school. I was originally supposed to go to Highland Park since it is the same distance from my house to school. But due to transportation reasons, we had to go to Topeka high since it is closer to my house. I’m not sure if I made the right decision though.
The day before my first day of school, I asked my parents about what high school was like for them.
My mom said, “It is one of the most important times of your life when you go from becoming a teenager to becoming an adult. There is nothing to be nervous about, just do your best and we’ll support you all the way.”
My dad added, “All you need to worry about is what you want

They tell interesting stories from their past and none of their classes are difficult at all. I believe the most interesting teachers I have met from my Freshman year would have to be Ms. Waldo and Mr. Kassin. Ms. Waldo was really funny and nice most of the time. Her mother’s side of the family was from France and her father’s side of the family was from the United States. She also looks pretty young for age, just like fine wine.
Mr. Kassin is really cool, too. He served as Major for the US Marines way back when and is a proud American. He is always there if I need help with anything and is kind to his classes pretty much all the time. Also, he doesn’t give any assignments that are too hard to complete since they are easy to do.
I had the wrong impressions about this school when I first stepped in, but after my first day, I knew that I made the right choice. I didn’t know what high school was really about since I pretty much learned it from movies and TV. However, thanks to the support from my family and friends, I felt like that the next 4 years will be the best and most important years I will ever spend. The message I want to leave you with is this; Don’t be nervous about anything that might give you the wrong idea about something. As long you have the people you love that support you, you can achieve

It was nearing the end of the 5th grade and I started to realize that I wouldn't be going to the same middle school as all of my friends. The administrators came to our school to tell us about middle school and not one of my friends or people I knew said that they would get to Shadow Ridge. They all said that they would go to Rocky Top. I had one person say that they were going to Shadow Ridge. They were one of my best friends.…

“You’re just a white girl trapped inside a black body,” were words I heard repeatedly as a child. For the longest time I considered those words a compliment. As an African American girl native to the Congo, I was naïve enough to think this statement meant how fully immersed with American culture my appearance, language, and every aspect of my personality was becoming. To me, those words held acceptance from my American friends and families—the only imaginable thing any foreign child yearns for. It hadn’t occurred to me that underneath that statement hid a message very twisted that would follow me for the next 12 years of my life.…

It was a normal Tuesday at good ol’ Freeburg Community High School. Our rambunctious lunch group sat around the table to enjoy the lunch of the day, chili. Now you see, I had brought my lunch, but I wasn’t allowing that stop me from enjoying a steaming bowl of chili. My bowl of chili warmed my hands, heart, stomach, my esophagus when it was occasionally too hot, and eventually my lap. Between all of the jokes and laughter I hadn’t noticed that my hands were shaking a tad more than normal; if I had noticed, I would have done the smart thing and set my bowl down rather than hold it.…

“You must get an education. You must go to school, and you must learn to protect yourself. And you must learn to protect yourself with the pen, and not the gun”(Josephine Baker). Growing up in Southwest Philadelphia and Upper Darby, I have seen a lot of my peers turn their backs on education due to the hardships of their urban school environment. Due to the poor education system and their circumstances, they decided to head towards street life such as selling drugs and gun violence.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

He would always say, “I don’t care about points, I care about personal records.” As long as I was improving personally, that was what really mattered. I took this advice to heart in other areas of my life as well, working hard to achieve my own personal goals instead of goals others had set for me. Throughout my life, my dad was under the pretense that I would one day inherit the family company. In reality, I had little desire to do so, and had my own business endeavors.…

So far, the first few weeks of high school have been pretty good. At first, I was scared that taking all of the possible honors classes and an AP class would mean that I would be drowning in homework, but it’s actually manageable. The freedom that has came with high school has been great. Having an off block has been extremely useful to keep up with the homework, to study or to just have a break from classes. I, also, really like having the long classes…
