Mrs. M: Poem Analysis

Improved Essays
Mrs. M taught 12th grade English at my high school. Even though it would be my last year in high school it turned out to be one of the toughest years in my educational experience. Mrs. M was the typical school teacher, being very organized with her lesson plans and what her goal was for each lesson. She was very effective in the sense of presenting the material and assigning many assignments to get the point across, but the environment that she contributed to presented difficulties for learning. Her preferential treatment of students was not beneficial to the educational experience and therefore is deserving of blame. A fellow student had suitably described her as a garden gnome, although with regal stature. She always moved about …show more content…
If one was late to her class for any reason, excused or not, they would be required to recite a poem to Mrs. M. This was if it was only the individual’s first time being late. The second time one was late they would be required to sing her poem to the melody of any song. If and only if you are late a third time, you had to sing and dance. This is humiliating and does not actually accomplish anything. The poem goes as follows:
“Dear Mrs. M, I apologize for my lateness, as it will never happen again. There is nothing more important than this class. You are the best English teacher known to man. I vow to not be later

M that I also found to be blame worthy. In general she would give preferential treatment to students that brownnosed. You might ask why it is such a big deal to me. It wouldn’t normally bother me except that the brownnosing was blatant and obvious manipulation. The students S and A was a favorite of Mrs. M. When asked questions Mrs. M would seem to favor their responses, seldom challenging what they claimed. When other students would ask something she was very impatient and critical of them if she felt that she had already addressed the student’s question. Her preferential treatment of students was both annoying and distracting. These actions are blameworthy for the simple reason of equality and fairness, especially in the classroom. A necessary part of education is the teacher to student interaction. Throughout the school year in Mrs. M’s class, her preferential treatment of students took away from the otherwise effectiveness of her teaching. The overall atmosphere in my opinion is vital to the educational experience. If this could be avoided, I believe the educational experience would be strengthened

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

Let’s discus Mrs. Brown first. She is a “old-timer” teacher. She is a strong believer in being in a teacher oriented classroom and the students having respect towards her. She clearly stated to Pat Conroy on how he needed to keep order in class, which she said “you have to keep your foot on them all the time, step on them, step on them everyday and keep steppin’ on them when they gets out of line.” Just from this it is clear how serious Mrs. Brown is and that she is in control of her class.…

For the longest time, I carried the words of Ms. Chobot, my English teacher at Fulton Elementary School, in my head and heart. According to her, I was poor in English, lacked basic courtesies, was a disturbance in class and never participated in anything. She eventually dismissed me as a hopeless case with no chance of doing well in life. She had made a judgment – I would not have a bright future. And all this, when the other teachers in the same school approved of my behavior in their class and found me to be a quick learner.…

Poetry isn’t exactly known for being the most straight forward form of writing due to the heavy use of metaphors and sometimes fanciful imagery. However, it’s the messages that poets include in their writing that sometimes causes one to question the simplicity of the piece as a whole. This paper will analyze Robert Browning’s poem My Last Duchess along with the WWI poetry Break of Day in the Trenches by Isaac Rosenberg and The Soldier by Rupert Brooke as a way to show that historical poems have a way of presenting direct messages to and about the British nation as opposed to the events in which they are referring. Before looking into the possibly deeper political meanings…
