Classroom Encouragement Strategies

My role as an educator does not require controlling my students, but it does require managing them. Middle school students are going through major developmental changes at this time in their lives, and they need to learn about the power of choice along with taking ownership of their actions to help them deal with these changes. Holding students accountable for their own actions teaches them to have better self-control and helps create a safer learning environment. If the students can control their own actions and practice self-discipline, then I will not have to attempt to control the students. My classroom management policy will help guide the students’ behavior to align with my expectations and classroom procedures.

As with any formal institution, there will be a chain of command in my classroom that should be followed whenever possible. Our classroom will be a democracy and students will be allowed to vote on topics or provide feedback on activities, but I will be the final say in the classroom. My classroom setup will be similar to the government, to help show students how the chain of command should be implemented. The principal of the school will serve as the president, the vice principal

This strategy is based on her findings that almost all misbehaviors can be narrowed down into four categories: attention, power, revenge, and avoidance of failure. I have noticed these misbehaviors in the classroom and I think this strategy will be an effective tool to help minimize misbehaviors. The three C’s stand for Capable, Connect, and Contribute. I want to connect with my students, show them they are capable of doing their work, and help them see how they can contribute. This is not a strategy that I will share out loud with the class, but I will implement and follow-through with it as a personal
