Music has the capability to change lives and move the ones who listen to it. It has extraordinary powers to change the way people think and act. With such a profound effect on people how beneficial is it on the process of learning? It can be hard to find something perfect to listen to with millions of songs and hundreds of genres to pick from. When trying to improve the learning process there is music out there that can be distracting, which can be problematic. On the other hand, listening to the music has the significant ability to improve focus while increasing memorization. Likewise listening to music can be a great learning tool in any situation, in or outside of the classroom. So when listening to just the right music it can have a …show more content…
According to Frederic Patenaude, the author of over twenty books and someone who loves to relentlessly debunk learning myths wrote a great article. In his article, “Boosting Brain Power with Classical and Baroque Music”, which was posted on a dominate website in the health field. As the author puts it, “music, such as that composed by Bach, Handel or Telemann, that is 50 to 80 beats per minute creates an atmosphere of focus that leads students into deep concentration in the alpha brain wave state. Learning vocabulary, facts or reading to music is highly effective” (Patenaude). In other words, Patenaude trusts that there are certain types of music that can effectively be used as tools to improve focus, which in return increases comprehension while learning. The Baroque music is able to relax the brain, which is able to lower stress and anxiety. He believes that focus can be optimized when the unnecessary distractions faded away, at least, for the time the music is listened …show more content…
Though Baroque music is the face of deep focus music it is significant to note that someone trying listen to music to help them concentrate does not necessarily have to listen to Baroque music. Baroque music is in fact slow and calm; it empowers the mind to be fully optimized at ease while blocking out unnecessary thoughts. So I enjoy finding music that has the equivalent beats per minute as Baroque. My mind stays concentrated effortlessly due to the resting heart rate of my own matching the same beats per minute of the music. While listening to gentle music like Baroque music it allows me to zone in on key material noticeably better than when I listen to rap music. The music is able put my mind in a tranquil state of ease, which promotes a more effective learning process. Being capable to use music that is effective is great, but what about being efficient too? I love being able to stay focused, but there is nothing too special about it if I cannot retain the content that I am focusing on. The entire point of learning is being able to demonstration that you have comprehended in some form, an exam for example. Patenaude lacks the emphasis on memorization in the learning process. Anyone familiar with having trouble remaining focused, like me, would agree. The difference is clear between not listening and listening to a Baroque type of music.
