Monster By Kanye West: Song Analysis

For the opening moment of the play, I thought it would be appropriate to include a song that gives a sense of mystery and fear; to be rather eerie. In the beginning, it is late in the night, as Francisco, a patrolling guard, is waiting for the character Bernardo to relieve him from his watch duty. Francisco is nervous as he claims that he has seen a ghost wandering around that looks like the deceased king, Hamlet senior. Given this, I decided to employ the 2010 song “Monster” by the Chicago hip-hop artist Kanye West, as it has a rather creepy and dark feel to it. Focusing specifically on the beginning of the song, Kanye West states “oh just another lonely night, are you willing to sacrifice your life?” This particular line is perfect as it …show more content…
Though it is debated by scholars, as a group we believe the climax occurs when Hamlet stabs Polonius in the presence of his mother Gertrude. For this rather gruesome act of violence, I believe using the song “Iron Side” by Quincy Jones would be fitting. This song grabs the audience’s attention as it has high shrilling sounds. If an audience member were dozing off, this song would definitely wake them up and grab their attention. The high shrilling sounds that occur in this song happen in the beginning and last for approximately 18 seconds. After these 18 seconds end, the beat changes, which could also highlight the fact that this is a turning point in the tragedy as it moves to the falling action. The act by Hamlet in itself is startling, but it is even worse considering that fact that he killed the wrong person; Hamlet thought Polonius, hiding behind a curtain, was Claudius. Remarkably, Quincy Jones is an artist also known for creating hip-hop inspired music that is from the city of Chicago. This song was produced in 1971, but it still remains popular as bits and pieces of it are commonly used in rap and hip-hop songs today; still giving our piece a modern and relevant feel to it as our reimagined version is set in present day. Certain words that are used overlap between the different songs. Kanye described women as gold diggers who take his money and do not really do anything in return, in his song “Gold Digger.” The Notorious B.I.G. used the world gold digger in his song, “Another,” referring to his girl taking his money and spending it with someone else. In Shakespeare’s literature masterpiece, Hamlet, Shakespeare uses humor as a device to briefly distract the audience away from tragedy and dark plot turns that invade the rest of the story. The humorous scenes in the play persistently arise directly before a scene of dramatic emotions or violence. The comedic scenes are scattered throughout the play; mostly prevalent in times of darkness. The most influential comedic scenes in Hamlet appear when Hamlet is hysterically ranting at Polonius, informing the people about Polonius, disposing of Polonius’s body, the gravediggers conversing with Horatio and Hamlet, and the discourse between Osric and Hamlet.…

How do the plays of Shakespeare change when they are adapted for screen? Michael Almereyda’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet transposes one of Shakespeare’s most notable tragedy in modern day Manhattan, setting the framework for a modern retelling of the story. The use of “ complex array of media technologies, genres and practices” introduces the over arching theme of entrapment and imprisonment in the capitalist society thatHamlet resides in, immersing the narrative in a world of brand names, video technology and cameras. As such, Michael Almereyda updates the play for modern society, the era of media technology and digital communication. Here, Denmark is a corporation, Hamlet a film student observing the world through his camera lenses and Claudius is not the new king but now the CEO of Denmark Corporations. Though…
