Text to Self: When I was attending counseling sessions after being bullied my counselor started asking me various questions about me. Eventually, she was convinced that I had ADHD. However, she said that she did not have the capacity to officially diagnose me. I have always done exceptionally well in school,but I do have trouble focusing in class, especially during tests. Most people who are diagnosed with ADHD have a parent, sibling, or close relative that has also been diagnosed with ADHD. Furthermore, twins are more likely to have ADHD, “A child who has an identical twin with ADHD has a three in four chance of also developing ADHD”. These statistics are a result of research conducted in Australia. How does someone know if they have the gene that affects ADHD? However, Dr. Pellham believes that the best way to treat ADHD is through behavioral modification therapy. Many students today are diagnosed and then medicated. Whereas, Dr. Pellham believes that students and teachers need to work together to modify classrooms. Dr. Pellham argues that therapy is more beneficial in the long run than medication. Studies such as Dr. Pellham’s suggest that more therapy should be implemented across the nation rather than medication. As a result of Dr. Pellham’s findings the CDC altered their recommended course of treatment for people with ADHD. Therefore, our society should move toward a more therapy oriented treatment plan than a medically oriented treatment
