Multimodal literacy is a tool used by authors, educators and even advertisers to convey ideas, feelings and engage the reader/student at a level greater than written language alone. From the 14+ years of education I have participated in already I can say with gusto that not all texts are as easy to read as one another. When a student is asked to do individual reading, I can safely assume that not every text at their disposal is held in the same regard. A comic book is far ‘easier’ to read and interpret than a non-graphic research article. When a teacher can understand this, the processes associated with engaging a student or classroom becomes something that is adaptive and relative to their needs and the needs of the knowledge they are to learn. …show more content…

The importance of any text needs to be evaluated this way, as this will help decide whether the text will provide the desired response for the student or class. In this regard, meaning can be described in three fields: compositional, interpersonal and informational (O 'toole, 1994).
By sowing the seeds of individual research and initiative in a classroom, teachers can help develop the necessary faculties of evaluation and critical thinking to guide their own style of learning, as well as explore those not so familiar to them in more depth. Multimodal literacy skills are something that simultaneously need to be taught by a teacher and subsequently learnt by a student.
