Multimodal Learning Preferences Essay

Improved Essays
The way in which someone learn is different for everyone. After taking the VARK survey it determined that I have a multimodal learning preference in two categories, aural and reading and writing. After reviewing the results from the survey I was not surprised with the outcome because I feel like those are the best ways in which I learn. Also these two styles have really transitioned nicely into my all my classes from my first year to the start of my third year. For me to learn the best I like to have notes in front of me to write down what the teacher is lecturing about. Both hearing and writing the notes makes it stay with me better and also I use this way to study my notes that I have taken. One class in which these learning skills have been put to the test was Organic Chemistry last year. Overall the professor would give us notes and then go over them in class lecturing about each new topic and gives us little side notes …show more content…
If I focus on my strengths more closely and continue to learn in those ways then I will become a better learner. Then becoming a better learner I will remember more of what I learned and be able to focus on being a better pharmacist student. As long as I continue to focus on the way I learn, study and take tests then in return I will end up becoming a better pharmacist when that time comes. But before that time comes I have to get better at what I’m already good at. It may take time to enhance these study habits and to become a better learner but if I focus on these methods then it will only come in time. Thanks to the survey I would’ve never fully understood what the best way I learn is but now that I know, I can only become a better learner and in return become a better pharmacy student by focusing on the objectives of each class and translating that into what it takes to be a

Elizabeth Barkley, author of Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty, said “Student engagement is the product of motivation and active learning.” This quote means that students become more engaged in the taught information when they are motivated and are actively learning. Students are motivated when they feel they are understanding the material and they are taking in the information. A way that students make sure they are engaged is by taking notes. In A Learning Secret: Don’t Take Notes with a Laptop by Cindi May, the author expresses her position about taking notes by hand versus typing notes.…

The quote "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn" by Benjamin Franklin tells me that by just telling me without showing me will not let me learn anything. I agree with this quote because when a teacher or someone tells me something about an assignment or homework I will eventually forget about it but if some one teach it to me step by step and I write it down will let me remember. By writing down the notes that the teachers wrote down step by step and write it my own understanding will make me understand more about the lesson because who understands my writing more than myself.…

It can also help them to develop relationships within their class to study their notes. This strategy is very effective because the students are learning how to just focus on the reading and to ignore any distractions. Another strategy is visualization and graphic notes. An example of this is a family tree, which is very helpful when trying to organize notes. In math, they have a different format for notetaking called an outline.…

After completing the VARK assessment, I learned that I have a multimodal learning preference. I believe this to be true. Depending on what I am learning, I will use a different learning still to grasp what is being taught to me. I was aware of this prior to taking the test. For example, when I am learning a new procedure at work, I pick up the procedure quicker when the person shows me the process, provide a quick reference guide, and also provide some personal detail to task to help them with the procedure.…

Not all learning styles can fit into a specific situation, there are times when a kinesthetic style is better than an aural. By becoming proficient in all learning styles, I would become flexible in all learning situations. The student should be able to shift towards the professors teaching styles in addition to exceling in their learning environment. Now, I work the best with the aural, kinesthetic, and read/write learning styles, with the weakest like being the visual learning style. By taking the content learned to the next level by shifting it across learning styles, I would gain a greater understanding towards it.…

Learning is multidimensional. Very seldom will a learner use just one type of learning style. There are four different learning styles: Visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic and multimodal. Multimodal is a combination of two or more of the learning styles. Those who are multimodal in their preferences can be more flexible about how they take in and give out information than those with a VARK profile that emphasizes a single preference.…

Fingerprints are unique to everyone, a similar claim can be made about learning styles, however there are some differences. Learning styles, unlike fingerprints, can be the same between two people and according to Fleming and Mills (1992), are generally classified under four types: visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic, known as VARK. With these types, according to Fleming (2016), being used to define the most effective and efficient way for a person to learn, which could only be one of these types or multiple. In my case, I am a multimodal learning, meaning that I learn best under a multitude of circumstances, specifically read/write, visual, and aural.…

Listening and Note-Taking Listening and Note-Taking is essential in order to be successful in all aspects of college. When an individual listens and takes quality notes they retain the information being presented a lot better than if the person did not take notes or listen to what was being lectured. There are a few different strategies to use for taking notes for example: The Outlining Method, The Cornell Method, The Sentence Method, The Charting Method, and the Mapping Method.…

I take a lot of notes in most of my lectures so when I am studying for an exam I can see what topics the professor focused a lot on. This helps me see what main points I need to study and what minor points I can skim over. I used this skill on my last exam and it helped me get a better grade than I expected. Looking at the test questions for clues helps me understand what the question is focusing on so I can remember the exact topic and hopefully pick the correct answer. I have used this skill throughout high school and even in college.…

For some reason I’ve always hated the idea of taking notes. It’s like every time I heard the teacher mention anything about notes, my heart sank to the pit my stomach. The repetitiveness always pissed me off. My notes were always subpar because of this. I grabbed my P.O.W.E.R learning textbook (which seems like the answer to most of my problems) and lo and behold chapter 3 is all about taking notes.…

I have always been good at taking notes in the past because teachers I had during middle school and through high school when at an average pace when doing lectures. This had allowed me to take notes pretty much word for word and thus do better in class. However in college now you have to shorten up the notes and wright down what you fell is important because teachers do lectures at a faster pace sine they have to cover more info during the class instead of slowed down were everything is needed as notes. So basically note taking has become note making because you have to take notes on what you fell is need and simpler version of the information being shared in class. Along with remembering things and taking notes I found studying an interesting topic because college studying is different than studying back in high…
