Personal Narrative: My Decision To Move

Improved Essays
Making the decision to move is never an easy process. It gets even harder to decide when it involves moving to a new state. Going new places and meeting new people is always something to look forward to but after one too many moves I felt ready to stay put. I moved every year of my life from the time I turned four until the age of fifteen. Once I started high school in Alabama I was determined to stay in the same school district for longer than two years. Moving back to Georgia was a thought that never even crossed my mind.

As a little girl moving from one city to the next seemed like moving from one country to another. Walking into a new school on the first day was almost as intimidating as not knowing if I was on the right bus or not.

Being in a bigger school, with some familiar faces, and sitting back and watching the drama rather than be part of the drama was the most life changing experience. Having time to myself and being around my family made me realize the type of person I truly wanted to be rather than the person I was. I did not want to be the stuck up girl that spent all the money my daddy made just because I could nor did I want to be the quiet shy girl who didn’t speak a word all year. Moving to Georgia gave me the opportunity to start fresh and represent myself in a whole new perspective. And so I did. That is what lead me to the person I am today with the people in my life. I now have more self confidence than I ever could have imagined myself having. I now know that nobody can tell me who I am or who I should be. I reestablished my relationship with God and made better decision for myself. I learned you will never be able to please anybody no matter how much you do. I may have gained and lost a couple friends along the way but I would not change what I have or who I have for the world. Little did I know that moving back to Georgia would completely reshape me as a person and lead me to a happier and healthier

I was the captain of the soccer team, safety and kicker for the football team, and point guard for the basketball team, and just the thought of having to fit in somewhere else was unfathomable for me. A universal theme for me moving from Texas to California is overcoming. I was 8 years old when my family moved, and had to overcome knowing no one, a new school, and being out of my comfort zone. At this age you tend to start making good friends, all hang out in groups, and be less adventurous. My parents kept saying, “Find people who like the same things as you, and everything else will be easy”. The next week I did just that.…

Things you experience are one of the major factors in who you become. I am 27 years old and have moved 26 times in my life. This has made me extremely resilient to a variety of situations, especially change. I generally welcome chaos and get bored extremely easily with repetition because I am so used to things changing frequently. Most of the places I moved to were similar enough culture wise, but some of the places, like Chattanooga, TN, were very different from what I was used to.…

Moving constantly, never having a place to call my own, I finally moved to a city that eventually shaped me into the person I am today. I spent my elementary years in Sylmar, then I moved to San Fernando, and later we alternated between the United States and Mexico, never staying in more than a year in one home. It was rare if we stayed in any city longer than two years. Unfortunately, due to the constant packing and moving, I never made any true friends; I was isolated, lonely, awkward, and kept everything to myself. No one taught me that in life it would take more than just hard work and good grades to succeed in life.…
