Many sociological causes influenced my decision to attend college and more importantly, Clemson University. Factors such as family, class, gender, culture, race and age all played major and minor roles in why I am here today. Ever since I was a child, Clemson always was in the back of my mind as the college I had wanted to attend due to family ties to the University. As I entered my senior year of high school, this played a major role as I only applied to two colleges, Mississippi State University being the other. Upon receiving my acceptance letter to Clemson, the choice was abundantly clear…

“I don’t know” I can still distinctly recall my eleven-year-old self repeatedly saying to anyone who tried to talk to me. It was my first day of school in America and that was the only sentence I could put together in English. I was born in China and lived there my whole life until my mother decided to move to New York. I thought I was just visiting her for winter break, but she dropped me off at school just a week after my arrival. As my new classmates tried to talk to me, I can see their mouth moving but they might as well be speaking gibberish.…

Migration to the Americans was jump started with the arrival of Europeans, who desired resources from the Americas. Unfortunately, the arrival of the Europeans decimated Native American populations and transformed the regions of settlement that the Native Americans had previously populated. European migration to the Americas increased significantly during the 1600s and 1700s. A time I had to make a difficult choice is when I had to decide if I wanted to come to Mid-East or stay at Zanesville. The reason why it was such a difficult time for me was because I didn't want to leave my friends at my home school. Another reason why it was so hard for me was because I didn't feel like I was going to fit in with the people in my lab or my classes. During the first week of my junior year I was really nervous to get out of my comfort zone. I would get texts from my old friends from Zanesville of them talking about how much they missed me and wanted me to come back.…

In some countries like United States, many people of different race speak more than one language, that is because people from other countries migrate to United States to seek for better opportunities. Being the so-called Land of Opportunity United States is, it is also known for being a diverse country in terms of ethnic population. Hence, migration is linked to globalization, as well as, the issue with language. For instance, one commercial advertisement of Coca-Cola promotes diversity featuring children and adults from different places and a patriotic song called America the Beautiful was sung in eight different languages (“Coca-Cola’s 570).
