When students begin to doubt their abilities to complete projects or understand content, a self-fulfilling prophecy develops. Wigfield and Eccles partnered in two studies about the effect ability beliefs have on performance; in both the 1996 and 1995 studies, they found that believing that one is capable of completing a task influences the motivation to begin the task and the persistence to continue the task until the desired results are accomplished.
The problem of motivation, combined with a lack of self-advocacy skills (MacIntire, 2015) and lack of knowledge about the support services that are available, may be preventing students from receiving the support they need.

Only a few students have said that they, or people they know, have been contacted by the Starfish Early Alert System. They do not seem to be aware of many of the tutoring or computer laboratory options, nor do they seem to know what to do if they are feeling overwhelmed or confused about the material they are studying. This seems to be a dichotomy between what is encouraged by the college that needs to be explored, because it is possible that these students are not aware of the use of literacy supports or have trouble taking responsibility of their own educational needs.
