Monuments and memorials are key to acknowledging and paying respect to the past. They provide honor to great achievements and pay homage to the sacrifice of people. Monuments are vital to society. Since they admire great achievements, educate society on past events, and inspire individuals to imprint their own footsteps in history. Though, monuments mean to respect figures of the past, many designers make the mistake of creating a monument not worthy of the important figures imprint in humanity. This is due to factors such as size, location, and materials used. Thus, one has to consider these factors when building a monument. If not, one could make the mistakes of either, not giving the respect a monument deserves, failing to educate the community

Everyday people sometimes come out of their cocoon and excel after experiencing a monument. An example of this is again, the photograph of Columbus. The portrayal of Columbus, with his large bronze statue, is effective at inspiring individuals to become as great as him. The way he seems to look at the horizon gives the viewer a sense of inspiration, making the viewer want to be as great as him. This inspiration can be life changing, and actually, help the individual make his own footprint in society. Commemorating people on their achievements is a drive that many people use. Hoping to be great and remembered throughout the ages is desirable. Making the monuments of today influence the leaders of tomorrow. Another example of inspiration from a monument is shown in the article “Making a Memorial” by Maya Lin “all the names of those missing and killed (57,000) must be part of the memorial.” The memorial has all the names of the people who fought for the same cause. They all fought and died to protect America’s freedom. This can influence an individual to join the same cause, even decades later. Seeing all the names inspires people to not let the sacrifice be in vain. It influences people to pick up arms and fight the enemy. Though, this memorial is only influential because of its every detail. If the memorial was smaller and in a much less adequate location there would be less motivation to join the cause.
