It was mainly because of the loss of values and trust the Marine Corps was receiving from the American people due to the different actions of Marines while at war. At that time, we had been at war for over 12 years and the Marine Corps was beginning to lose sight of “who we are”. Although General Amos and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, SgtMaj Barrett, did a great job of explaining to the NCO Corps, “who we are” and “what we do”, they never mentioned “why”. The Marine Corps was at tough time during the Re-awakening movement, and the focus from the Commandant and Sergeant Major was to try and put a stop to the actions that were ruining the reputation of the Corps. I believe it is the job of the Staff NCO’s to talk to their Marines about the purpose of what we do as Marines.
