The Importance Of Minorities In Society

In the words of Stephen Covey, “Accountability breeds response-ability”, otherwise interrupted as acumen, a quote referring to an individual who holds themself accountable because they are responsible for responding appropriately at any and all times. We Americans continually respond to minorities in our society inadequately as a result of a lack of communication, minorities from African Americans, to Hispanic and Latino Americans, and even those in the LGBTQIAA+ community. America was founded on Christian ideologies and the concept of its entire people having freedom, granting all Americans the right to their, “pursuit of happiness”. After all, the Ninth Amendment states that we all are “endowed…with certain unalienable Rights…among these …show more content…
It should be necessary for all Americans to not only know but abide by all five of these concepts because they would improve the quality of life for all people by improving the quality of character, which is a major goal of recent initiatives and movements like President Barack Obama’s MBK (My Brother’s Keeper) program and BLM (Black Lives Matter). My acronym “M.O.P”, stands for Magnanimous, Ostentatious, and Prolific which describes the needed over display of courage for a fruitful result, which would change the mindset of Americans creating a win-win atmosphere instead of maintaining this concept of “survival of the fittest”. This will cause America to push through every obstacle that comes our way with the end in mind to maintain a winning attitude. Healthy communication will lead to a stronger America, which is the result of understanding the value of life of those with in our society, having a mutual perception, and overall compassion or ubuntu. Poor communication has been a plague to mankind before there was a separation between black and white or even rich and poor, so the answer to all our problems lies in us beginning aware of the arts of being humble, peacekeeping, ubuntu, and structuralism. By galvanizing ourselves as “a people” we will reduce negative perceptions which will improve our ability to communicate. This reminds me of a statement a coach used to tell me a plethora of times on and off the court, he would say, “In life we don’t have problems, we just lack knowledge at times”, which translated to me as if we know more we do more. The main issue in America is a lack of knowledge of ourselves, our environment, and not to mention the world we live in and our minuscule decisions each playing a major role on each other, because if we were knowable of the power of communication with each other,

In this Excerpts from The Myth of the Model Minority: Asian Americans Facing Racism, Rosalind S. Chou and Joe R. Fegin focuses on white racism against Asian Americans. With Asian Americans having the title of “model minority” big issues within their community are not addressed like their high rates of suicide and depression. Another difficulty that Asian Americans go through that is overlooked is that they have to give up their cultural and background in order to be successful in America. With Asian Americans having this idea of the “model minority” put on them the few who do not live up to the stereotypes presented to them are looked down upon and if they do meet their stereotypes they are considered geeks or nerds. In the beginning of the reading they speak about a young Chinese American who appears as a model student with her excellent academic status however her grades did not define who she was as an individual.…

With all the media attention and also by focusing on these situations only taking place with minorities, it has created an “Us vs. Them” mentality. Us vs. them can be related to the law enforcement and citizens due to the results of how police are not accepted in their communities anymore. In minority communities, law enforcement are disproportionally White Americans and the population of the community is African America (Baker, Goodman, Muellerjune 2015). In these communities, African Americans cannot relate to officers and as an effect, will reject help and also send off the message “that we don’t need or respect you in our neighborhoods”. The way recently that the media has covered police misconduct shows that more African Americans are…

Equal education for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or educational needs, has been the focus of the educational system. Many laws and federal mandates have been passed to ensure that all students receive equal opportunities in education. However, a recurring issue is happening in our educational society – the underrepresentation of minorities (African American and Hispanic Americans) and low socioeconomic students in gifted education. Underrepresentation refers to the negative discrepancy between the percentage of a student group (example: minorities) in gifted education and the percentage of a student group in the school’s enrollment (Hines, Anderson, & Grantham, 2016). Disproportionality between minority students…

I feel like I've been ranting a lot lately lol. This is for my fellow muslim brothers and sisters. I just want to say that just because we are muslim, doesn't mean we share the same lived experiences, the same oppressions, the same privileges, the same races, ethnicity, or sects as one another. We are still muslim, yes, however we need to acknowledge that. The Prophet SAW said "The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body.…

    Race's Role In Society

Race is not scientifically significant but it can be considered socially significant, because in society we separate each other into different categories which we discriminate based on our skin color or background. “Based on this research, many scientists agree that “race is a social concept, not a scientific one . . . . we all evolved in the last 100,000 years from the same small number of tribes that migrated out of Africa and colonized the world” (Angier, 2000). Race plays a huge role in our lives today as it did centuries ago, because your race can affect how you live. For example, you could feel isolated by a crowd because they stare or you could just be isolated from certain activities from school because of your skin color.…

This paper explores the historical conflict between law enforcement and members of minority groups. It reviews literature, that in more recent years has started to explore this issue in order to create reforms and methods to improve relations between the police and members of minority groups. It explores the New York City Stop-and-Frisk program that seems to unproportionally target members of minority groups. Further, when looking at the people 's general perception of law enforcement it becomes apparent that African-American communities are especially suspicious of the police and are very likely to perceive racial bias. Some of the methods that have been suggested in order to improve relations are an increase in community policing or the use…

The cycle of the minority group being oppressed is one that is not new to the American culture. In comparassion to the immigrants, african americans are a group heavily known to be oppressed since their arrival to what is now called the Untied States. In the african american community, factors of consumerism and the ideal of the american dream also are used to divide and conquer . The division come by way of material goods such as liquor, food, guns and much more that appeal to the base nature of human beings. This desire for individual pleasure has led to a division amongst the African American community.…

In the increasingly divided American world, people distinguish themselves based upon skin tones. People would accuse one another of being rapists, terrorists, thieve, and robbers upon the sole basis of skin tone alone. As a part of the minority community, there was always the pressing fear of being criminalized for an act that we did not commit, yet paradoxically, this same trouble is also the fuel that continues to drive the minority community forwards to surpass the socioeconomic niche in life. The minority community is defiant though not in the traditional sense of breaking the laws; we defy the belief that we cannot rise up in status; we defy the belief that we are the parasites of the American society that needs to be exterminated; we…

Teaching children about race and diversity is an important and necessary life lesson not only because it molds the minds of future generations but because talking about race with children can help them see beyond race and the race of other children just as it can with children of different genders. Children can recognize the differences between themselves and another individual of a different race regardless if the conversation of race is present in their home. Children who are spoken to about race are more likely to see past the superficial differences between themselves and children of other races and seek more meaningful relationships based upon common interest rather than visual similarity. Discussions regarding race are an inevitability…
