The Importance Of Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka

The word “metamorphosis” applies to the whole Samsa family. By beginning the novel with Gregor 's transformation into a bug, Franz Kafka experiments with the meaning of work, family, and overall a person’s value. Gregor’s changes have a rippling effect on the other characters in the book as their behaviors alter as the story goes on in response to his new appearance. These modifications specifically show you how people can react under pressure, in a psychosomatic way. Odd enough, Gregor’s transformation affected each individual in the household, while he remained almost exactly the same, despite his physical appearance. Prior to Gregor’s metamorphosis, Mr. Samsa often would go to his wife for any family decisions that needed to be made. After the metamorphosis, Mr. Samsa begins to gain a firm demeanor and gradually gains a sense of purpose. He no longer is described as a pathetic and old man. Furthermore, he comes to the aid of his wife and daughter as they reveal extreme adverse feelings toward Gregor’s visible appearance. In response, he shows his authority and resentment and throws apples at Gregor until one becomes lodged in his back. “The father bought breakfast to the petty officials at the bank, the mother sacrificed herself for the undergarments of strangers, and the sister behind her desk was at the beck and call of customers.” (70) This undoubtedly exemplifies an alteration in the family’s approach towards Gregor from bearable to unsympathetic; however it is also an indirect, positive change in Mr. Samsa.
