The Importance Of Mercy In The Bible

"God is more willing to pardon than to punish. Mercy does more multiply in Him than sin in us. Mercy is His nature."
- Thomas Watson

What this essay will concentrate on is how Mercy is explained in the scriptures and its effect in our society today. I will provide stories from the Bible, both from the Old Testament and the New Testament where the theme of Mercy is evident. This will give clarification to what the theme is and what it’s significance is to us Christians today.

A theme refers to a significant message in a specific text. All forms of art and text like books, movies, plays and musicals have the main theme. Just like the scriptures. There are a variety of themes found in the Gospel. Some themes that are found are forgiveness,

Gospels and Parables help us understand what God is like. They serve as life lessons for the people who read and listen to these scripture readings. In the gospel, Luke presents us with a God who is loving and merciful to the outcasts. The ones who are in the edge of society. In Luke 8.40-48. Jesus heals a woman who has suffered hemorrhages for twelve years. During that time, their society would consider her as someone who is “unclean”, and because of this people would not touch her and avoid her, leaving her out. What is surprising though is that even when people would not like being close to her, she still went through the crowd to go to Jesus. When Jesus asked her who had touched him she owned up to her actions. By him asking and calling out on her actions, he had publicly showed them that the woman is healed and she shouldn’t be rejected anymore. This shows that Jesus shows special concern to the people who are in the very edge of society. This miracle story also shows that it isn’t just Jesus’ power that healed her, but her faith. This gives us the idea that if we trust in our Christ then he will show us Mercy. His loving and merciful personality can also be seen in the parable of the Prodigal Son. “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! …show more content…
To look around and be open to the people who are struggling. It has motivated me to be more helpful and merciful as there are still a lot of people in our world today who are in desperate need of support and care. People such as immigrants (especially in the USA), the homeless, homosexuals, transgenders, unemployed. People who are victims of oppression, abuse, racism, sexual harassment. Our God is calling us to be just like him, showing love and mercy to the people who are in most need. Just like our Lord, we will be there for them, showing them corporal works of mercy and love in whatever way possible, whether it is just by listening to them and talking, donating, feeding them and giving them their daily needs. We can also show spiritual works of mercy, such as admonishing the sinner, instructing the ignorant people, counsel the doubtful, comfort the people who are in sorrow, bearing the wrongs and forgiving the hurt that has been done. “Be merciful, just as your father is merciful.” Luke

The first message I ever gave was here a couple of years ago, and it was also on Romans. And in that message, I explained what it meant when certain words are used to begin a passage. Romans 8:28 begins with the word “AND”. When a passage starts with the word “AND”, what it means is, that it’s a connection. It’s a connection between what he has been saying and what he's about to say.…

“Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption” is a captivating narration of the impact of empathy and the human spirit. Author Bryan Stevenson works tirelessly to help provide relief for death row inmates who were wrongly condemned, poorly defended, or left to die in America’s overgrowing prison system. He not only offered these people legal advice, but also showed his clients compassion and mercy, which many of them had not previously experienced. This is mostly evident in one specific passage in his story: “There is a strength, a power even, in understanding brokenness, because embracing our brokenness creates a need and desire for mercy, and perhaps a corresponding need to show mercy. When you experience mercy, you learn things that are…

Authors, like Arthur Miller, present themes through major characters' actions, their thoughts, dialogue, and character motivations. Stories have a theme to help the readers relate and to connect to their characters and to maintain the story's soul. More than 10,000 people are homeless in Atlanta on any given night, and I was given the opportunity to go and help them. A year and a half ago I went up, from my lovely suburban hometown in Orlando, Florida, to the urban hub of Atlanta, Georgia with my local church’s youth group to help out with the homeless epidemic. Being a veteran of mission trips, I was prepared to help out people who needed help and let the kindness of God move through me like a beacon of love, but I was never prepared for all of it to change the way I viewed life. Morals inculcated in me on that trip still affect my decisions to this day. Morals such as being selfless, having patience, and having empathy profoundly define me as a person because of this trip.…

Scholars have widely agreed that the Gospel of Luke has a special focus on the concern for the poor. This concern for the poor and marginalized first becomes obvious in the account of Jesus’ birth. In the Gospel of Matthew (2:1-12), it is the Magi, wealthy men from a distant country that come to worship Jesus, while Luke tells readers about shepherds- lowly men working in the fields coming to see the baby Jesus. Also, Luke has women, Elizabeth and Mary who as the focal point of the infancy narrative, while Matthew uses two men, Joseph and Herod the Great. The Gospel shows God being immensely concerned for those who were considered poor, and as a result was marginalized.…
