In this article, the writers research and provide information to acknowledge that, although there are many positive aspects of having a mentor train new nurses, it can also become a negative experience to both the mentor and protégé. The authors findings identify the negative aspects of a mentor, from the perspective of the protégé, while providing proof that a negative experience could indicate why there might be a high turnover rate and understaffing in the nursing field. This article offers suggestions to improve the outcome of this relationship, while also expanding on the benefits, in order to provide more reasonable expectations and the responsibilities of both parties in order to make the working relationship a positive and beneficial experience.
