According to a study done by Harvard’s Deborah Azrael, “roughly 40 percent” of the share of gun holders did not go through a background check” (Masters). Having a background check is an extremely important factor when buying a gun. “When background checks are required, they are extremely effective at keeping guns out of the hands of prohibited persons” (Universal Background Checks). There are any other factors that keep guns out of the wrong hands. However today, it is possible for almost anybody to get his hand on a gun.…
Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act was intended to prevent the purchasing of firearms to convicted felons, but failed to recognize other avenues, and failed to establish an accurate background system. The Brady act was created as an Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. It instituted a five day waiting period and required that every business in each state, which has a license to sale firearms, to conduct a background check on each individual prior to a sale. It also established the creation of a national instant criminal background check system. This act came into legislation after the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981 and due to the injuries obtained by press secretary James Brady.…
On the other hand, this statement can also be flipped for gun reform. If people kill people then how are these unfit citizens able to obtain guns legally. We live in a society that mental illnesses are extremely prevalent. We also live in a society that a mentally ill person can still obtain a firearm and enter a school or public place and mass murder a high number of individuals. Having people in the world with disorders such as mental illness it is important to have the appropriate rules and regulations to keep that individual and others safe.…
Between the years 2000 and 2013 the amount of deaths by guns in America exceeded the amount of deaths caused by AIDS, drugs, wars, and terrorism combined. Even more shocking than this statistic is how unique this issue is to the United States. In the United States there are 29.7 homicides for every 1 million people. Switzerland, with the second highest rate in the world, has only 7.7. It is not that Americans are just more violent individuals, in fact the US ranks far below first for crimes rates other than gun violence (Lopez).…
For example, in Missouri, the chief technical officer of the Osage County Guns says that, “buying a handgun is practically a cakewalk... customers can walk into the store and walk out with a gun if they pass the FBI’s instant background check” (Rosen). He went on…
I have learned that you oppose restricting the right to bear arms. First off, I would like you to know that I do not oppose guns. I think hunting is a great sport for those who can participate safely, and that most people can responsibly protect themselves with a gun. However, America’s gun problem is outrageous compared to other developed countries. I realize that our homicide rate is slowly decreasing, but our suicide rate is actually increasing.…
As the country with the largest stockpile of privately owned firearms, we aren’t doing much to prevent them from falling on the wrong hands. According to The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act convicted felons, drug users and abusers, and mentally ill people are prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms (FBI). But, convicted criminals and mentally ill people are acquiring firearms without any difficulty and are using them for the wrong reasons mainly because of weak laws that regulate the sale of firearms. Firearm sales in gun shows are not regulated by the FBI and buyers are not required to go through any kind of background checks at the time of purchase. According to a report by the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program titled “Inside Gun Shows: What Goes on When Everybody Thinks Nobody’s Watching”, it is reported that more than forty percent of gun sales occur privately without any regulations.…
The United States of America is no stranger to tragedies. Whether it be the Columbine High School Massacre or the shooting at Virginia Tech, America has been plagued by terrorism and the murder of many civilians. Although often thought to be unstoppable, I have constructed a plan to end the reign of terror. By instating strict gun control, intensive outpatient therapy for military veterans, and allocating money for more intense security in public spaces, the United States government can efficiently protect the citizens from the atrocities that have plagued the country in the past.…
Exactly half of the prisoners in the U.S. have mental health issues, states a 2006 Justice Department Study. Through my research I have found that jails and prisons are without a doubt considered to be new mental health facilities for those with mental illnesses. There is a high percentage of people who suffer from mental illnesses in prisons and jails, which has caused a ripple effect in taxation. The problem that arises from incarcerating people with mental illness for petty crimes, is that the money could be used more effectively. Due to how mental health illnesses have been treated in the past, appropriate and effective use of screenings and facilities shows to have more success with helping those with mental illnesses.…
Americans tend to believe that guns are easily obtained, when in reality current federals laws make it nearly impossible for criminals to legally obtain a weapon. Because of this misconception, Americans are still supporting stricter regulations believing many gun-control campaigns about loopholes. Firstly, when surveying state prison inmates, only 2 % admitted to having got their weapon at a flea market or gun show, 12 % from a store, and the 80% had been obtained illegally or through friends (Hardy). Secondly, NICS instant background checks automatically scans the potential buyer’s criminal and mental health history (if available) and denies them from purchasing the weapon if any red flags come up. However, it could be possible for the criminal to go into the store with a friend whom has a clean background and legally purchase the weapon or make a legal private purchase from an individual without having to go through the background check process.…
The amount of individual that go through the criminal justice system that have a mental illness has become a growing issue in the criminal justice system. Many individual that enter the criminal justice system are bound to end up in prison, where they have little access to mental health help. The amount of individual that enter the criminal justice system that have a serious mental illness is estimated to be 16.9 percent. These individuals are usually repeat offenders that circulate through the system because they do not receive the treatment that they need. (Almquist & Dodd, 2009).…
62% of the 31,000 deaths caused by a gun are suicides (Cornell 2). According to Arthur L. Kellerman, MD, “residents of homes where a gun is present are 5 times more likely to experience a suicide than residents of homes without guns” (A Case for Gun Control). I have experienced the effects of suicide within my own family. One month ago, my cousin Marisa committed suicide. She was 26 years old and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia a few years prior to the tragic incident.…
It is clear that at this point in time, it is much too easy to purchase a firearm. At a minimum, the background check system should be reworked to prevent unstable people from buying a firearm, despite the person 's “clean…
Jhaneidy Checo CRT / Prof. Boluch Winter '16 Hi Senator Dianne Feinstein, A man first shot his mother with a Marlin .22, where he then took a vehicle and transported firearms to a school. He brought his weapons onto school grounds – breaking the law – and throughout his journey to every classroom, murdered children and teachers. How would you react if you were one of the teachers who could have stopped this man on the act? This was the Sandy Hook Elementary school shoot out, and Adam Lanza had no compassion.…
The definition of mental illness is as follows: “A condition which causes serious disorder in a person’s behavior or thinking” (Oxford Dictionary). Within John Steinbeck’s famous story, Of Mice and Men, the character Lennie suffers from a mental disability, which ultimately leads to his death. In a similar way, millions of people suffer from a form of mental illness, and are often are not treated for their disorders, which frequently ends in a form of tragedy for the individual. Often, those around them are uninformed on the subject and they either become bystanders to the individual’s downfall, or treat the person as an ill-mannered idiot. Within some countries, such as the United States of America, the nation’s leaders are trying to bring their societies out of these “dark ages,” and give the current and following generations the education they require on this subject.…
