A general notion within the aging population is that memory capacities may often gradually decline. Some factors which have previously been taken into consideration as a factor in memory impairment include: sensory processes, cognitive impairments, psychological factors, dementias, as well as neurobiological factors (Practitioner,). However, not every individual who ages experiences such dramatic declines in their short term and long term memory. Looking into how factors such as hearing impairment have an interaction with memory impairment is important as it would help individuals and others understand how perhaps interact better with those who experience memory declines, whether the extent is mild or severe.

Most elderly individuals, if asked, are more likely to report complaints within their short term memory. A correlation has been found between sensory status and cognitive functioning (Verhaegen, 2014). It is not a surprise as hearing loss is known to be the thirst common chronic disease in elderly people. Not only can the loss of hearing affect perception of information, it can have diverse effects in physical, emotional, social and behavioural functions as well (Shahidipour, 2013). This can be seen in studies looking at short term memory performance within younger and older subjects, and in doing so determines whether there truly was an age interaction in which the hearing impairment increases as individuals age, leading to declines or impairments in their memory. When looking at groups of subjects of different ages and hearing abilities, it was shown that when controlling for age and relative hearing capabilities, individuals who had supplemented assistance with hearings still performed lower than the two groups (Kurt, 2011; Verhaegen, 2014). Not only does it indicate long term memory impairments can be investigated upon a significant amount of people, but it also suggests that its interactions with other cognitive functions have effects in widespread manners.
