Memory & Its Influences
My research topic of interest was enhancing memory, and the use of memory in court. The article The Dark Side of Testing Memory: Repeated Retrieval Can Enhance Eyewitness Suggestibility used for my research shows the various use of witnesses in criminal trials as eyewitnesses. These people have to use their memories in order to remember what happened at the crime scene. In order for the witnesses to be able to testify, they need to make their statement with the police, whom may use their authority to alter their view or make it more confusing for the witness to remember. Based on that hypothesis, four different experiment were carried which helped solidify the results. For these experiments, empirical study and quantitative study methods were used. The empirical research study utilizes the relationships between two variables, and uses of quantitative methods to put the result in numbers. Moreover, it can also be said that the researchers used correlation method as well, because the researchers studied how well one variable can influence the other. The college students and other participants with other characteristics were used as their test subjects. For all the four the experiments carried, every set of experiment had the same an independent, dependent, constant group, and also maintain constant testing material and test through it all. The test subjects were given a crime scene, distracted afterward at different times, then got tested on their memories. After all four experiments, the participate could either test as correct, misinformation, or the do not know group. The result of the experiments showed that more than half of the participate that were asked to recall what they saw after less distractions, were able to be correct. Also, the participate without a huge time gap or difference were able to remember more clearly. Further, the ability to use a numerical or quantitative method to measure the result helps make their point even stronger, and repeating the experiment a couple of time strengthens the result found. The experiments used people age eighteen and older, but this is too board and non-specific. The researchers should have used the same age groups for each experiment. This could help decide whether memory mostly depends on age. Besides the age range used, the same kind of distraction should have been used for every group. The different types of distraction are not said to be constant. One type of distraction should have been used for each study group, because some distraction might be more influential than others. Apart from that particular aspect I would change, I will maintain everything else in the experiment. The experiment and project seem fairly comprehensible and can be carried by other
