Personal Narrative: The Medical Culture In My Life

Throughout the life I have lived so far, I have realized that something about me was not the same as “normal” kids. For what I have to say is the medical culture I live with in my life has taken me a long time to realize that I am not like those around me. You may look at me and see a strong and healthy teenage girl, but deep within I am struggling. Struggling not to get sick, not to have an allergy attack to whatever mother nature has to offer, not to have an asthma attack at any given moment, and struggling not to itch my skin so it will not rash. These are my every day battles that I face and with them all it gives me great fear. The fear that if I break down I am weak and the fear that if my appearance is not normal, others will think differently about who I am. However, with all of these medical issues and fears, my family has always told me I am special, and this is not the worse that my body has taken. How do these medical situations make me special? How does eczema, asthma, and allergies make me a special and lucky person? I have no idea and no understanding around the logic of my family, until I saw the photos for the first time. Richard and Linda Cull were so happy to have gained another member of their family. However, the word healthy turned into a medical emergency. My mother had told me that they needed to transfer me over to UConn Hospital, so I can get the best treatment for what I had. My mother let me go and my father came with.
