The Implications Of Being Spent On Social Media

Documenting media intake is a big eye opener because it can be hard to comprehend how much time is being spent with media. For me, the process of documenting every time I was exposed to media made me want to avoid it altogether. I would think about how I had not checked Facebook in a while and then decide that I should not check it because I did not want to do the tedious work of documenting the time I had spent on social media. However, having to document my media diet did not frequently stop me from texting or checking social media. Analyzing my media diet was not a shocking experience, but it did lead me to think about the lack of variety in my media exposure. This “revelation” helped me to form some new, clear goals that will aid in becoming …show more content…
Right now I consider myself to between the experiential exploring and the critical appreciation stage. Where I want to be in the future is fully in the social responsibility stage of media literacy development. “Recognizing that there are some actions an individual can take to make a constructive impact on society” (Potter 2014). This is one of the components to being in the social responsibility stage that I would like to achieve. Pushing myself to this point would mean making myself aware of the media that I am exposing myself to, analyzing the data so that I clearly understand its impact on society, and coming to the realization that I, as an individual, can make an impact on society through media. I will need to broaden my media exposure so that I can build more knowledge structures. This in turn means that I need to be consciously using the seven skills when looking through information that different media sources will expose me to. It is also important that I change the way that I have come to see media. Right now I see media as more of a leisure pastime, and to get to the social responsibility stage I need to think of it as tool and important aspect of my everyday life. I need to subtract some of the social media from my media diet so that I can make room for other types of media, such as news sources. By changing the way I think about …show more content…
It showed me that I do devote quite a bit of time to media sources without even consciously thinking about it. Checking social media and texting has become a habit for me, and I want to change that in the future. The types of media that I was exposed to while I grew up helped to shape the person that I am today, and also form my media habits. Hopefully by relying on my skills to expand my knowledge structures I will become more media literate. To do this I will need to expose myself to other kinds of media and analyze the types of media that I have already been exposed to. If I can meet these seemingly simple goals, I will be able to reach the social responsibility stage of media literacy

Rather than succumbing to this submissive idea, I learned to think for myself, and form my own ideas about topics rather than have others tell me what to think. I now fully understood Dr. Mederer’s three rules: never trust your teacher, never trust your calculator, and never trust your textbook. While this may seem backward coming from a math teacher, the lesson is impermeable. In this day and age, it is essential we form our own opinions from the facts presented to us, and to not merely listen to what is told to us. To say media and social media does not consume us would be a lie, and the only function it serves is to stimulate us, present us with opinions to grab our attention as we sit bewildered and completely vulnerable.…

Before watching Miss Representation, I had never realized or paid attention to how much negativity the media has on women. I was aware of criticisms women face in their daily lives, but I really never thought there could be something stimulating those criticisms, such as the media. Women are taught at a young age that they should look a certain way and the media plays a major role in reminding women what they should look like. No matter how much we would try to avoid getting in contact with any type of media, we really cannot escape it. It is literally everywhere, where we want it or not.…

The title Miss Representation is the first clue as to the content of the documentary will center on: the play on words of “misrepresentation” vs “Miss Representation” gives the sense of beauty pageant, in which women (although some pageants include contestants as young as toddlers) compete to win a superficial title based primarily on looks. The premise of the documentary is to reveals the complexities of women’s role in society, and the double standards that create the gap between the reality of women’s appearances and self-esteem, and the media portrayal of women’s bodies, which are – as the title indicates – severely misrepresented. In the film, there are several examples of the disparities between what is expected of women and the reality…

Media Literacy is defined as the ability to analyze and understand what we see in the news everyday. Media literacy is super important in today’s society. It is clear in examples like the case of Michael Brown that media perspectives warps everything we see today. One example that stands out to me was the activity we did in Contemporary Social Themes examining different perspectives in articles about the Murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson. Most of them seemed to take the side of Michael Brown.…
