VITAL ROLE MEDIA HAS IN REFLECTING AND DETERMINING WHO I AM
It cannot be refuted that media has a vital role in molding our society today. In my opinion, our media choices determines and reflects greatly who we are . Media is considered a ‘Mirror’ of today’s society and is said to directly influence the perspective of individuals. It is media that helps the masses to get information about a volume of things and also helps to form opinions and make judgments regarding various issues. In view of the fact that I am a Nigerian Pentecostal Christian, there are certain things that I cannot listen to or watch. For example, I cannot listen to explicit songs or watch movies like ‘50 Shades of Grey’ or ‘Nymphomaniac’ because they are in contrast to my values and beliefs. I also consistently use my acquaintances media choices to determine who they are and whether they are individuals I want in my life. My best friend once told me a quote by J.K Rowling that has stuck with me for a long time, It says “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” We can all lie about who we are but I believe our media choices would ultimately reveal who we truly are below the facade we put on. One of my favourite african proverb is ‘No matter how long a log stays in the water, it doesn 't become a crocodile.’ It means that no matter how hard you try, you can 't fake your true identity.
