Violence, otherwise known as the use of physical force to injure someone and/or to inflict damage onto something, has been around since the beginning of time (Gale “Violence and Violence Prevention”). Violence is now a part of the everyday person’s life and is so common that the severity of it in today’s society often goes unnoticed. Violence is involved in nearly every aspect of our lives, such as TV programs, video games, music, and school. Because of this, the amount of violence in today’s society continues to increase, and the people of today continue to grow more violent towards one another. However, among all of the violence that occurs today, violence within the media and violence within the youth seem to be one of the largest issues, similar to that of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. According to Kinder, “Parents and community members can play a major role influencing children’s behavior concerning violence by establishing guidelines and monitoring their exposure to violence in the family, community, and media.” This quote illustrates how much of an impact a child’s surroundings has on their behavior and that if their exposure to violence is monitored, then they are less likely to behave violently in the future. Another reason why media violence is a problem is because it is one of the main causes for school violence. This creates an even larger issue, since school violence is often linked to other criminal activities, like possession of guns, knives, and explosives (Gale). Violence in schools can also lead to students turning to drugs or dropping out completely in order to avoid the situation due to the fact that they are fearful of the activities that go on (Gale). School violence also interferes with a student’s ability to learn and is correlated with criminal behavior in the future
