Quantum Mechanics Personal Statement

I find that this cluster dives deeper into subjects that I have merely tasted, yet would like to get more in depth in. Quantum mechanics has always been a field I have admired because of how it sparks curiosity in my analytical side. Just as how I yearn to not just be able to utilize but to understand complex mathematical algorithms, I want to be able to know how quantum mechanics functions in our universe; this field plays a huge role in mankind’s scientific achievements. It is a field with groundbreaking accomplishments that will alter the scientific world as we know it, just like Einstein’s theory of relativity. Additionally, nanotechnology has also been one of my childhood mysteries- I would love to find out more about applications to this …show more content…
As I learned more in school, I realized with every piece of information I absorbed, an inexplicable childhood mystery was unraveled, and the world didn’t seem so confusing and random anymore. Later, as I dove into the world of math, I noticed that numbers and patterns seemed to "click" together when concepts and ideas revealed how they are related to one another. Like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, I find I really enjoy the feeling of satisfaction when I finally comprehend how things conform with one another. I strongly believe that studying math and science enriches and satisfies my mind with knowledge. I find that I value the opportunity to challenge myself in math and science classes in order to gain a deeper understanding of these subjects, and to help me succeed in life. For example, in Trigonometry-Precalculus Honors, I am constantly faced with the obstacle of learning and applying difficult concepts. Therefore, I must break down the ideas, taking the time and patience to slowly learn the material. Persevering, I continue to work until I achieve absolute comprehension- until I feel what I had thought was difficult at first has become easy. This feeling of mastery is what I find rewarding; it is something that pushes me to pursue STEM fields. I hope that a month at COSMOS will assist my pursuit of knowledge and understandings in the topics of math and science, as well as answer many questions I have had relating to the courses I have chosen- both of which are topics I have been fascinated with since a child. Overall, I look forward to learning new material while challenging myself in a way that yields a rewarding

Many people have different opinions about what they think about math. For instance, I looked up opinions people said about math and most of them were negative. One person stated: “I know a lot of people don’t like it. For me, I was good at the subject, but I didn’t really enjoy it.” In the story “Why is Math so important for kids to learn?” by Elise Wile, the author’s attitude toward Math is interested for these reasons: (1) she explains how it teaches logical and critical thinking, (2) she explains how it teaches life skills, and (3) she also explains how it supports continuing education and careers.…

Goals and Expectations for My Time At Castleton and Beyond Castleton is the perfect environment for me to exercise and apply the ideas expressed in Zakaria’s book, In Defense of a Liberal Education. After reading the assigned book this summer I found that I gained a new understanding of how schools are run, from elementary to higher education. Throughout my time in high school I experienced an ever growing curiosity as I was being exposed to new ideas by both my teachers and my peers, but not being thoroughly taught about these new subjects. Castleton is where I hope to gain the ability to explore these curiosities I’ve acquired more effectively both in and out of the classroom. I was never quite sure what it meant to go to a liberal arts…

Until only recently I didn't know why I pushed myself as hard as I have in school, but now I understand it is because I truly love learning. This is part of why I think I should be admitted into the honors program here at the University of Iowa.
