Materialism is when people consider material possessions and physical comfort very important. We as a United States live in an era of extreme consumption; to the point that there are more shopping malls than high schools found in America. For many years’ people have had the “Keeping up with the Jones’s” mindset. Therefore, when their neighbor gets bigger and better things, as do they. This phenomenon doesn’t only find itself in the older generations, it begins when individuals are younger. Females have a large involvement, as teens they continuously compare themselves to their peers, famous persons, and their surroundings.
