I was the only straight male in the room. Josue one of the Dominican members of the group greeted me and mentioned that it was noble to find out more about the Latino gay community to be able to grow as a therapist and become a better natural support for my brother. While the complement was well received it was awkward for at the beginning as he mentioned it as I was going to give this person a hug. I have a tendency because of my Dominican background to greet people with a sign of affection, if it is not a kiss in the cheek, it would be a hug. Some of his relationships got better and some took a turn for the worst. While he mentions that he was very direct with his family when he came out he stated that one of his biggest issues wad talking to his dad about it. His dad had a history of gang affiliation back when he was in Puerto Rico, and one of the things he used to do was beat up gay males just for being who they are. Ewing knew this and still decided it was time for him to his father to know. When he did come out to his father, his father stated that if he would have told him a couples of years before that he would have violently kicked him out of the apartment, but that he was to old for that now. He requested to not be affectionate to his partners in front of him or in his house. Ewing mentioned that he respected that and he would not be doing that informant of his parents’ a he has respect for his family. In contrast, his brother went into a bathroom and locked himself there for a while. When he finally came out, he gave Ewing condoms and advice him to be safe. His mother and sister were more accepting and asked lots of questions. He mentioned that this helped him once he came out as it showed that they accepted him for who he was and were actively engage in getting to know a new side of him.
