“Marketing! Get Your Marketing Manager Right Here!” “Popcorn! Get your popcorn!” You may have seen venders at a Rangers’ game yelling, trying to persuade you into purchasing their tasty treats. You have probably even found yourself dishing out the outrageous six dollars for the mediocrely proportioned snack, but have you ever thought about what kind of effort and money that companies spend to get your attention? Marketing is one of highest paid, most steadily successful careers in the industry today (Consumer Merchandising/Retailing Management). Fear not, there are many satisfying components of this occupation to help outweigh the more strenuous tasks. A major one is that you get to work alongside a motivated, pleasant group of people (Marketing Manager Interview). Marketing teams’ pursuit is based on making people happy. Therefore, these people can often be described as personable, warm, intelligent, energetic, confident, and reasonable. Marketing management requires not only active listening and learning, social perceptiveness, skillful communication, but also dedication and willingness (Occupation Profile). Advancements are common; many start as marketing assistants or researchers before building to marketing executive status. After ten years in the business, the task changes to actual management-- mostly proofreading the assistant’s work, overviewing the task of the marketing team (Marketing Executive). Marketing managers must work ceaselessly until intentions are met. These goals, whether personally or company-wide appointed, may require business trips with destinations close and far (Marketing Manager Interview). For me, this is great. I have a hankering for travel, to involve myself with diverse people groups-- knowing that a mission for success is being accomplished is simply the icing on the cake. The first step is education. Most companies prefer that you have a master’s degree before hiring you; at the very least, most necessitate a bachelor’s degree. The good news is, marketing management can source from a wide variety of college majors so you still get freedom in deciding what path to hone in on. Marketing managers often choose liberal arts degree plans, such as sociology, literature, journalism, psychology, or philosophy. Also acceptable are business administration, advertising, and engineering. Courses in mathematics, economics, finance, statistics, art history, photography, public speaking, creative writing, technical writing, political science, and, obviously enough, advertising are suggested (Education). Certifications are available from professional organizations, such as American Marketing Association and Marketing Executives International, but are generally not requirements for employment (Marketing Executive). Here at Durant High School, we offer a marketing class that would be beneficial for kick-starting this career (Durant Independent School District). Even though, I have not taken this elective, I am still on my way to a career in marketing management by obtaining and holding a marketing position at a local business, Marie’s Boutique. At Marie’s, I handle all social media interactions, assist in selection and assembly of in-store displays, and guide customer concurrence on the sales floor. My
