Community Service Should Be Mandatory Essay

Like my grandfather and father before me, I decided as a young man to serve my country. My grandfather was an infantryman in the Army. He fought his way through Europe in World War II. My father joined the Coast Guard in the late seventies protecting our coastline in New York City. So I followed suit joining the Army and deploying to Afghanistan. My family is not unique or special in this regard. Many families have served our country. In other countries around the world, it is mandatory to serve. I believe service should be mandatory here in the United States as well. Citizens of America now more than ever seem to have a disconnect with their country and, a lack of appreciation for the sacrifices made by those that came before them. Most only experiencing what is outside of their community through TV and social media, while never having to be truly accountable for their actions. Many young Americans without any real skills in a culture of narcissism. Thinking only about themselves. To quote the comedian Louis C.K -“You know what, it 's not your life, it 's life. Life is bigger than you if you can imagine that. Life isn 't something that you possess, it 's something that you take part in and witness.” I would like to agree. Mandatory service will bring …show more content…
There are many that feel mandatory service would violate their beliefs. They would not willingly choose to take part in an "Unjust War". Whether they like it or not, it is mandatory that everyone register with the Selective Service at the age of 18. As a citizen, you are subject to this country 's decisions. Their service would not necessarily have to come in the form of wielding a weapon. There are many supporting roles they could take to help this country. Such as caring for the sick and help in establishing community programs. These would still offer a great amount of training and experience to help them become

As Debs quotes "They have always taught and trained you to believe it to be your patriotic duty to go to war" meaning the government has taught one as a child to serve your country. As you go along in school one develops this mentality that as a citizen of this country one has to fulfill duties that will help the country like fighting in wars. For example, since the start of school a person is required to pledge allegiance to the flag. Students would get in trouble if they were to refuse pledging to the flag. Similar to the draft if one were to resist it, then they would not be for filling their so call duties as a citizen of the United States.…

Rebuttal- Argument for Mandatory Military encourage equality In the United States, the creation of an all-volunteer, professionalized army has led to a virtual separation between the political class which promotes and approves wars and the mostly poor white, Afro-American, and Hispanic men and women who fight them. Mandatory military service is one of most powerful means of nationalizing people, of producing an important, shared experience among members of different classes, social backgrounds, and regions. Rebuttal- Argument that Voluntary military desensitize the political class and this country from war Voluntary Military creates slanted selection pressures which makes the military far less diverse than a conscripted military. The political…

Every now and then, Congress poses the question, “Should women be required to register for selective service?” Although I understand that they would want to make sure that the amount of soldiers available are endless, I strongly believe that women should not be forced to enlist. They should be given that choice. For years, women have…

    Military Draft Benefits

There are many benefits to a country by women and men joining our government military. While there is a benefit I think the decision should be voluntary. Serving is not for everyone. I would never think a draft is a good thing, because it isn't right to involve a person to go to war .I can understand asking people who are for a war and in line with their government to go to war. I can't see anything spot-on in sending people who are of different political beliefs than their government, or people who are against war, to fight in any war.…

What it means to be an American The majority of Americans would say their country, United States of America, is the greatest country on the face of the planet. However, it wasn’t always like this. Many of the bravest leaders who have ever lived, our ancestors, took part in fighting for the privileges and freedoms we Americans receive today. These courageous men and women stood up against what was wrong, and fought for what was right.…

What Happened to America? American ideals are the foundation for this great country's success. The most influential American ideals include democracy, rights, liberty, opportunity and equality (founding ideals). However, when the United States of America enters into a war, they betray these ideals and betray the foundation they were built upon. A few actions committed by the United States that goes against everything they supposedly live for include the lack of freedom associated with the draft, miniscule amount of respect for other nation’s rights, and the equality coupled with war.…

The United States of America, known as the land of the free, has many civil rights that our founding fathers and other influential figures have fought for. However, the freedoms that citizens value today is another story. In the past, Americans fought for the freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the right to vote, just to name a few. People in the present-day take their existing rights for granted and, therefore, have different trivial desires instead. The word “freedom” no longer represents equality of all citizens, but merely another cheesy historic slogan.…

The citizens of the United States should get to choose there freedom, which is one of our rights. People of all kinds should get to choose rather they would like to join the services or not. How would you feel if you had to serve in the military at only 18? Mandatory military service is cruel and uncalled for because they could have a medical issue, missing limbs and body parts, and they are blind and deaf. It's a little unfair for a girl or boy to have to fight in the military. They might not want to fight in the military for their country, and just want to be a teacher or an astronaut. They might not wanna die for their country and just have a normal life.…

Not only that, but in this day and age, there are completely new systems implemented in the Department of Defense and various branches, as they have expanded. For example, the Army now has three branches within: Active Duty, Reserves, and National Guard. This proves that the military has been much expanded, and when there is no current war that the United States is involved in, then there is no reason for further citizens to be forced into service, only by…

Some schools, like Wittenberg University, requires the students that attend to perform community service as a graduation requirement. In my opinion, I believe colleges should not be allowed to make community service a graduation requirement. I believe this because if you were a college student who works, where/when would you find the time to perform community service between working, studying and attending classes? Also, if student’s have to perform community service, it may interfere with their work/school schedule. However, when applying for employment, having community service on a resume would look better when an applicant is applying to work for an employer.…

Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…
